I used to lifeguard as a summer job. Watching little kids was one of the most amusing ways for me to reflect on what really matters. A 3 year old suffers great anguish over a cold pool, a snotty nose, or being yelled at and told to walk by one of the "mean" lifeguards (me). I wanted to say, "Cool it, kid. You're three years old. You haven't got a care in the world."
And then there are the 3 year olds that deal with a whole lot more. My friend Kelly has a little buddy named Holden, who suffers from a congenital heart defect. That 3 year old has a whole lot more on his plate, doesn't he?
Kelly says:
"Holden is… It is so hard to finish that sentence. Holden is the funniest, most intelligent kid I have ever met. He was born right when I met my fiancĂ©, so I like to think he is as old, and as beautiful as our relationship.
But Holden is not the only one with a broken heart. I myself have an aortic valve insufficiency, and Holden and I have always connected. Every time I see Holden, since he was a little infant, he wants to listen to my heart with his toy stethescope... like he can tell that we're both 'broken.'"
