On Changing Seasons

Pin It Print Friendly and PDF

Summer, for us, has been a season of stay.

Stay in Michigan. Stay by the beach. Stay in our new state, our new house, our new everything. It has been a season of exploring this amazing hidden gem that is West-and-Northern Michigan, and the unreal, crispy clear water and white sand beaches it holds.

It. has. been. insane.
<--in a goooooood way. I have become accustomed to gorgeous vistas, hot dune climbs, and the wavering bumps of riding in a boat. I've had a permanently packed beach bag for three months, and yeah, I've actually used it, sometimes many times in a week.

Can you blame me?

But, that season of sunny relaxation is waning, giving way to something also great but entirely different. Next up is fall (duh) and lades and gentleman of the jury, it is already here.

Fall is shaping up to be a season of go. Go to weddings. Jetset to Florida, Atlanta, Boston, and so on. Go tour wineries up north, go to the Florida keys, go to Chicago. Go, go, go.

And I'm okay with it. The leisurely summer has been a blast, but I am a fast paced girl, and I am more than ready to see what kind of crazy productivity this "go" pace brings with it.

Have some suggestions on fall "go" activities for me? Leave them in the comments below :)

Cheers to Fall!

Harvest Stompede Winery Tour: Leelanau Peninsula, MI

Pin It Print Friendly and PDF

This weekend, my husband and I had an amazing winery tour of the Leelanau Peninsula in Northern Michigan (I'm calling it NoMI, let's make that catch on, shall we?). For more information on the Harvest Stompede via their website, click here.

First, I just want to say that I had only average hopes for the quality of the wine here. I had been told that it would be mostly sweet whites, which is not my favorite, so I wasn't sure what to expect. But, I was blown away - as was my husband - by the quality of the wine! The reds we sampled were delicious and had a very earthy, smoky, peppery taste to them. So, for those of you unsure about northern Michigan wine, jump on the bandwagon and join in on the red fun, too!

movin on to the fun part...

We drove up to NoMI on Friday night and stayed the night at my in laws' ski house. It was a bit of a hike from their place to this part of wine country, but we decided it would be easiest because it meant we could bring the dog with us.

Saturday morning, we drove over to Leelanau Peninsula. The drive, itself was absolutely stunning, and we had some fabulous panoramic views of the Grand Traverse Bay, which connects to Lake Michigan.

Shady Lane Cellars

My friend Kelli had been here before and I had seen pictures that looked intruiging, so it was our first stop! It was also one of the closest stops to my in laws' ski house and quite close to Traverse City, so it made logistical sense as well.
There is a really neat feel here - they have a newly built outdoor patio with an outdoor bar and gorgeous, manicured grass. They fed us my husband's favorite food of the day - a bacon, swiss, and carmelized onion tarte. We bought a bottle of red (which was not the main tasting promotion, but we asked for a few red samples at the bar and were pleasantly surprised) and left after taking a few pictures of the winery.

Willow Vineyard

This one blew my mind immediately, and here's why:

Going into this event, I wasn't sure which wineries would bestow us with gorgeous lake and grape views combined, but it was immediately clear that this would be one of the best views of the day. I mean, how could it not be? The West Grand Traverse Bay is in the distance, and the foreground is a steep hill covered in grapes for the harvest. The little quaint cottage in the middle doesn't hurt, either!

We tried a bright glass of white and they served a decadent peach cobbler with maple burgundy syrup to accompany it. The desert was amazing; the wine was nice and light, but ultimately not my style.

There was a quaint patio where we sat for a while, just soaking up the view and taking in the wine. My husband went back inside and tried a Pinot Noir, which he enjoyed, so we grabbed a bottle in honor of our immense enjoyment in their spot. And we also snapped our only picture of the day that has both of us in it and is not a selfie! Pretty sure that was a fabulous decision.

Ciccone Vineyard & Winery

Fun fact: Madonna bought this property for her family member as a winery (Madonna is from Michigan! Boom). This alone made it a pretty popular destination.

The location left a bit to be desired (this could simply be due to the fact that they had the unfortunate situation of following the GORGEOUS Willow Vinery), but their Red Blend was pretty amazing and they paired it with a simple but well executed bruscetta. We didn't stay long, but we waltzed out of there with an expensive bottle of red, so clearly Madonna won.

^As always.

L. Mawby

Based on what I could find online, L. Mawby was a MUST. DO. They operate under the assumption that it's better to be all-star at one thing than mediocre at five, so they specialize in sparkling wines ("bubbles!") and do nothing else.

I did not warn my husband. He does not love sparkles. BUT I DO! So in we walked, and my husband loved it in the end. They served a sweet and spicy popcorn with a semi sweet sparkling wine, and we enjoyed the rolling view.

In the end, I tried a few more bubbles and ended up asking for a bottle of dry (almost brut) champagne. My husband then insisted we buy two.

Blackstar Farms Winery & Spirits

I also marked this place as a MUST. It is more than just a winery - it also has a bed and breakfast, vegetable farm, restaurant, and distillery. So, we went from the master of one thing (L. Mawby) to the eager experimenter of five.

Overall, the wine was decent - a sweet white - and paired with a butternut squash soup with goat cheese and toasted nuts. But, we did not feel compelled to buy anything, and it was quite busy inside, so we peaced out.

The gorgeous view here was on the drive in - a steep hill covered in vineyards and various other farming plots. There is something really neat about the height this has.

I also have to add that I seriously want to go back to Black Star Farms, stay at the inn, and eat at the on-site restaurant. Then, I want to bike to the surrounding wineries for the day.

Leelanau Wine Cellars

Tip for using social media during an event: check the hashtag name of your event (in this case, it was #harvest stompede) and see if any other people have posted an image that looks awesome -- then go there! That's how we ended up at Leelanau Wine Cellars. I saw another image that looked gorgeous and blue, so off we went.

This particular location is actually a tasting room for their vineyard, so you will not see rolling hills of grapevines. But, you will be blown away by the view of West Grand Traverse Bay. It feels immensely huge and completely private at the same time.

Here, we tried a white wine that was served with brie and mushroom soup. My husband is not a mushroom fan, so we "shared," a.k.a. we asked for one sample and I was the only one who touched it. It was decent, but whatever. This location was really all about the view, and there's no shame in that!

[Knot Just A Bar]
After finishing our wine, we decided we were ready for a meal. The same building also housed this place, which had amazing views and good enough food. We had a beverage, and I had mahi corn tacos while my husband ate a burger.

This wasn't actually part of the tour - it was just a regular restaurant in the same building as Leelanau Wine Cellars' Tasting Room - but it was extremely enjoyable to take a few minutes to sit down and eat a full meal with this view.

Good Neighbor Organic

Next, we headed northwest. We ended up at Good Neighbor Organic, which was modest in appearance but definitely interesting. I wasn't so sure about the idea of their hard cider or peach wine, but I quickly repented upon tasting. We walked out with a bottle of peach wine, but truth be told, it was hard for me to not order the cider. I keep thinking about it...

They paired it with a chicken salad on chips, which was unimpressive but I shoved it in my face anyway. The star of this show was definitely THAT FRUITY WINE!!

Gill's Pier

What do you expect from a place with a name as simple as Gill's Pier? It was a very simple location with a nice tasting room and patio, set on a small pond. The wine was so good, and I think we bought one of the more expensive bottles of wine here. Their featured red was amazing, and they served it with an asparagus brisket.

Food be darned (it was ok), that red was full bodied and goooood. My husband was set on getting one, so we sampled a few more reds before deciding to go with the original promo.

Verterra Winery

I picked this place because, on the map, it looked like a great location set on a thin strip of land between Lake Michigan and Lake Leeland. The building, itself was mediocre - it was a tasting room set up in a towny area of a place referred to as "Fishtown-" but the surrounding area was great. Within a block, we could walk to the river connecting Lake Leeland to Lake Michigan, walk to where it meets Lake Michigan (it was very rapid water!), or see some shops.

They served us a white and paired it with a "blue and maize" corn chowder. The soup was decent, and so was the wine, but as usual, we were kind of looking for red. We tried a few and grabbed a bottle, then walked down through the Fishtown area. There were a lot of cute, tiny stores built onto the boardwalk, and it was a very picturesque environment.

We did manage to snap another picture of the two of is, albeit a selfie. We stumbled across this huge tree (is it a birch tree? I need my aunt and uncle to weigh in) that seemed like a perfectly bizarre backdrop for a couples' selfie.

Boathouse Vineyards

This was our last stop, because it was getting late and this happened to be on our way back. They are located on the river (Leelanau? I'm not sure which one), and they have a walkway that goes all the way down to a dock on the river, which is lined with adirondak chairs (YES!). The wine was decent (white, I think?) and they served a pulled pork slider. It looked kind of boring, so I skipped it but imbibed in the white.

We were kind of ready to go at this point, so we decided to head home.

P.S. There was a huge swan. He was nice and hardly moved, but we were so close!

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

  • Have you ever been wine tasting? What did you think?
  • Have you ever tried Michigan wines? Do you like them?
  • What's your favorite part about wine tasting?

Labor Day Weekend

Pin It Print Friendly and PDF

Labor Day Weekend kicked off with a fun run. I headed downtown with my running partner (the prettiest black dog eva) and we explored a bit on the paths by the river.

On my way back, I passed One Trick Pony. It's a local dinner spot that is downtown but slightly off the main drags, and I have always been curious about it. I immediately texted my husband and asked if he wanted to try it.

So, I got home, answered the remaining emails from the day, and then got ready for dinner. I had just unboxed this Zara Peplum Jacket, so despite it still technically being August, I wore it with black pants. It was actually a bit chilly that night, so it worked out for me!

Any excuse to wear Zara...

Dinner was decent, and we headed home to relax a bit. It had been a pretty long and demanding week at our house, so we wanted to totally veg. After a few hours, we decided to head back out for a little treat, and we went to Furniture City Creamery

Bow down to Queen B.

You're looking at the Dutchess of that little establishment. I think I may have squealed in excitement...

The next morning, we headed over to San Chez, which is fast becoming one of our joints for breaking the fast. I had an egg white scramble with mojo onions, feta, and chorizo, with a side of fruit.

Afterward, we did a bit more relaxing and took a nice, long walk. By the time the afternoon rolled around, it was time for us to start getting ready for the bachelor and bachelorette parties we were goin to that evening.

I popped open the cold brew I snatched up the night before, and it did not disappoint.

A swift kick is good as long as it's not to the face!

I also ran a few errands -- literally. Donning neon clothes and aviators, I ran around like sorority-girl-barbie and grabbed a few things to bring to the party.

Then, it was time to take a shower and get gussied up in all black for a night of shenanigans.

With a black bottle of cava and a tupperware full of vodka soaked gummies, I hopped in my cab and headed downtown to the hotel.

As usual, what happens at a bachelorette party stays at a bachelorette party... but we did have plenty of fun times. I'll leave you with this...

Flash to the next morning, when I was hurting a little bit. Not awful, but enough to warrant heading to Terra for a huge chorizo fritatta and some hair of the dog bloody mary. It did the job, and I chilled out the rest of the day.

A big breakfast held us over until dinner, so we were pretty starving by the time 5pm rolled around. We headed to Harmony Brewing Company for some pizza.

Even the 45 minute wait and poor service could not have made me upset about this pizza. It is just that good.

Monday morning, we woke up prepared for a super productive day. We started by going to the gym bright and early for Body By Science.

Then, I spent an hour in the kitchen preparing and cleaning up after a wonderful brunch feast.

Afterward, we did a lot of errands, went on a few long walks, tended to the garden, and sat on our front porch watching the rain storm. It wasn't the sunniest, but it was definitely the most relaxing Labor Day.

Oh, yeah. And we got more ice cream. No wonder I'm feeling a little sluggish this week... No regrets!

A Superbly Parental Weekend

Pin It Print Friendly and PDF
This weekend, my parents came to visit. We toured around and showed them the ins and outs of our new city, and many drinks were had.

There was also pizza and filet mignon.

On Friday, my parents arrived just before dinner. My dad had a hankering for both pizza and beer, so thankfully, there are a few breweries in Grand Rapids that specialize in pizza.

One of these beers was called "Lil Sebastian" which, if you watch Parks and Rec, is amazing.

We ended up heading over to Harmony Brewing Company. We were seated immediately, and we proceeded to have a delicious meal.

They have some really delicious pizza combinations (sea salt and cracked pepper tossed arugula with feta and slices of thick prosciutto? Count me in!), but I did feel like their pizzas were slightly undercooked. Everything else was perfect, so I think it can be remedied by just asking them to leave them in an extra minute or two until they're crispy.

Afterward, we headed back home and watched our wedding video (we finally have it!).

The next morning, we started with a yummy brunch at Terra. As usual, everything was amazing. This is fast becoming a favorite brunch spot, regardless of city.

We went back to the house and gathered our things to drive to Holland for a beach and boating day. The weather looked great, so we grabbed our swim suits and set out.

By the time we got to Holland, the weather was still decent, but it slowly cooled down so that it was comfortable but not quite perfect for sunning. Darn you, June in the Midwest! We bundled up and took a cruise on the boat with my in-laws and sister in law.

Afterward, we all banded together to prepare a feast for 10. We made steaks, a big salad, and a delicious veggie dish that reminded me of a cheesy Ratatouille.

We drove home late that night and went straight to bed.

Sunday morning, we headed over to Cherie Inn, which is one of my new favorite breakfast places, too. It is a bit understated, which is what I like about it. The exterior and interior are both simple and somewhat traditional, but then the menu blows your mind with its interesting combinations, and the food is delicious.

Afterward, we drove around the city a bit to show my parents around. We drove to the east side and went to Reed's Lake to show my parents how easy it was to get from our city-living to some good old lake life.

Once my parents left in the afternoon, my husband reminded me that the US was playing in the World Cup. We decided not to get cable (we have done this in every place we have lived together so far), so we would need to head to a pub for dinner, beer, and soccer.

I donned my USA gear and we headed to The Green Well, where we found seats at the bar and had beer, dinner, and 95 seriously nailbiting minutes.

And that, my friends, is a wrap for the weekend! We're gearing up for another fabulous weekend with my cousin (the mixologist queen) who is coming to visit with her main squeeze!

  • Did you watch the game?
  • What's so great about your favorite breakfast joint?

A Day In The Life - May 2014 Edition

Pin It Print Friendly and PDF

It's been quite a while since I did a "day in the life" post, so I figured I'd break that habit now that I'm in a new city. Life is kind of all over the place lately, because there are odds and ends of house things and organizing to do. For me, I need a serene, unpacked, peaceful environment in which to do my design work and write, so it is key that I nail this first in order to be productive later.

Wake up is around 6:45. I walk the dog with my husband and then we have coffee together while we make and eat breakfast.

Once he starts working around 8:15, I do the same - I fire off a few email replies, publish the post on Clara's Mint Juleps, and then get ready for yoga.

Yoga is at 9:00, and I live so close that I can easily leave at 8:52 and still have time to walk there, check in, find a spot, set up my mat, and lay there in shavasana for a few minutes.

10:15. After yoga, I am sweaty and exhausted, but I decide to get the rest of my sweaty chores in, so I drop my yoga mat at home and head out shortly thereafter.

My plan is to run to an organic store to buy nutritional yeast, which I need because I've just decided to go dairy free for a few days (I live on well-structured impulses, people), and God knows I can't go cheese-free without my favorite cheese subsitute. It's like a half way house for cheese addicts.

Gotta have my nutritional yeast

There is a great farmer's market only about a half mile from me, but they don't seem to have very many dry goods, and I know the store farther away has it in bulk. So, at about 10:50, I jog the 1.5 miles, buy the nutritional yeast (as well as some hemp seed, lemons and limes, apple cider vinegar, and ball jars) and stuff it all in my backpack to jog home.

"Nourish" Organic Market

I make a few random stops on my way home to peek into local stores, because I'm still learning the neighborhood. I end up getting home around 11:30. As I jog home, it starts to get cold, but thankfully I do not get rained on. Yay for timing!

I stop to take this picture (below), because there is something awesome about places in the city where the asphalt wears away to reveal the old school brick roads. If I drove a lot more, I would probably hate this. But, I am mostly a pedestrian now that we are back in a city environment, so I am able to find beauty in it. Yay for finding beauty in things you can't change!

11:45. I sit down and work for a bit, but am reminded that I have another somewhat work-related errand to run. I need jalapenos for the blog recipe I'm making tonight - jalapeno garlic turkey burgers - and I also wanted to grab some dust masks so that I can start whacking the tile out of the upstairs bathroom when I get the urge.

Note: Know thyself. For me, that means having things on hand to set myself up to do projects when I feel like it, because when I am in the zone, there is no stopping me and I get a helluvalot done. So, this day, it meant buying dust masks. Life is weird sometimes.

12:30. I hit up a grocery store for jalapenos and Ace Hardware for dust masks and some grilling supplies my husband asked for. They are not more than a mile away, but it's drizzling now, so I actually drive there.

1:00. I spend about an hour in the kitchen prepping the turkey burgers (and taking pictures), making herb aioli, and drinking a refreshing juice (mint + cucumber + apples). If you haven't noticed, I cook when I'm procrastinating. But, whatever. Dinner is always superb, and if it's original, it's blog fodder, so I'm not mad about it.

Around 2pm, I finally coax myself into a shower and then at 2:20ish I sit down to work (this is kind of abnormally late for my in general, but like I said, things have been wonky since we moved). I start this blog post, send a few work emails, and edit a bit of my second novel.

I feel a little guilty, because the book is about 97% finished and I only have two - TWO!!! - scenes left to write. But, it's the ending, and I have to nail it. So, if I don't feel inspired, I don't write.

Sometime in the afternoon, a delivery shows up, which totally distracts and derails me in a good way, and I open the heavy box to find a delivery of spirits from Prairie Organic Spirits. I am developing some vodka infusions, and they threw in some other tasty treats for me as well.

I plan to start the infusions in the afternoon, but instead, I decide to pour myself a drink around 5:30 and write. I throw together a cocktail with the cucumber vodka, the juice from half a lime, 4 drops liquid lemon stevia, ice, and soda water. It is refreshing, delicious, and just the right thing to get me firing words out of my fingers.

ALL THE WORDS.

6:15. My husband finishes working, but I still write for another few minutes. Finally, around 6, we fire up the grill and make some taaaaaaaaasty burgers.

Post-burgers, we walk around town for a while and get froyo (thereby totally ruining my no dairy thing, but hey, yolo...?).

8:00 try to watch an episode of Dexter (we're trying to get into it... it's slow), and eventually switch to the movie Butter around 9:00. We actually watch the entire thing, and I am in love with Jennifer Garner.

WHAT ABOUT YOU?
  • Have you watched Dexter? Do you like it? Am I finally going to get into it? Only on Episode 3...
  • What's your favorite cocktail infusion? Give me ideas!
