I've been dying to blog about this for about a week now but couldn't because I was waiting to give it to Chris! I was inspired by this article, which was pinned on Pinterest. How's that for the Pinterest Challenge? (Via Younghouselove)

Step One: Staining The Wood
Because I was planning to paint lyrics on this piece of wood (a scrap I found in the garage) in white acrylic paint, I wanted the wood to be much darker so the words would be more visible. Enter the old jar of wood stain I found in the garage! Seriously, my parents' house is full of old-yet-usable tools. Wood here, stain there, canvas here, etc.

Mid-staining, I realized my fingers felt wet... go figure, somehow I'd rubbed off the fingers on my right glove. I found the rest of the glove sitting on the floor in my garage. How on earth did I rub my fingers off? Ahh! Brown fingers! 

During the staining process, my dog wouldn't stop barking unless she could watch me. Within the 30 minute staining timeframe, she went from strolling around to being passed out on the ground. Was it the fumes? And no, she is not dead. Just napping.

Step Two: Tape 

After the stain is completely dry (wait at least a few hours - I waited overnight), tape out guidelines.

I just had a sneaky feeling that, if I didn't tape myself some lines as guides, I was going to end up spending hours on a project that turned out crooked (you know, like when you're little and you write as though the words are falling down the page). They really don't need to be perfectly measured. I didn't have anything to measure with, so each of these lines are one iPhone width apart. Just eyeball it.

Step Three: Paint
This is the part that takes forever. I used acrylic paint (white) and a paintbrush that was a quarter of an inch thick. It was pretty poor quality, so it fanned out quite a bit.  I considered aligning all of the words to the left but, after getting input from my sister (because I was, for some reason, paralyzingly crippled with my decision making skills this day) ended up deciding to space it all out.

Step Four: Remove the Tape

Once the paint has dried, pull the tape off to see your finished product!

We're moving Chris into a new house this weekend and will be finding a place to put this up. We're looking for a wall spot for it to call "home," if you will (cheesy, anyone?). I'll be posting a photo to let you know when it finds its home!
