A Quick Jaunt in Chicago - Part 2

Pin It Print Friendly and PDF
I slept at my parents' in the suburbs, so I woke up well-rested from an amazing, soft, king size bed. I made some breakfast for my mom and I and then we headed to her workout club, Fitness Loft, for some pilates and weights.

Afterward, we got a much-needed manipedi and then headed to her classroom. She is a kindergarden teacher (the cutest one, at that!), so she needed some help to set up her classroom.

hard at work?

After a bit, my brother picked me up while she kept working, and I went home to take a shower and get ready for the evening's festivities. We had a fun night planned, and we were meeting the rest of my family downtown for it!

Our first order of business was to find a rooftop bar where we could have drinks and appetizers before dinner. We arrived at IO Urban Roofscape (the rooftop bar of The Godfrey Hotel in River North) just before 5, and ordered drinks and apps.

a girl and her martini

Salmon Flatbread

Calamari
I am told it was good, but I did not even touch it because it looked too much
like baby octopuses and I can't really bring myself to eat 'baby' anything.

Eventually, we headed to our dinner location. We walked just a block or two to Zed 451.

They only serve dinner inside (you'll see why). We had about 45 minutes to blow before our ressy, so we headed upstairs to check it out.

We had cocktails on the rooftop, which was much lower than IO's and therefore had a very different, more "beer garden" feel. I had a blackberry basil tequila drink which was amazing.

Lots of "inspired" Herman Miller chairs. #gettherealthingyall

When our time came, we went inside for dinner. When we made the reservation, we didn't realize that this was a brazillian steakhouse- style dinner. That means it's all-you-can-eat salad bar and all-you-can-eat meat. We were totally surprised, but more than willing to take on the challenge.

And by we, I mean I.

We helped ourselves to a limitless "harvest table," which consisted of a variety of salads, appetizers, cheeses, and charcuterie. It is always a battle knowing your plate is bottomless, because you want to save room for the good stuff.

Eventually, they came around with the meats and we had a field day. Between a full stomach and the wine we shared at the table, we were all pretty ready to fall asleep that night.

WHAT ABOUT YOU?
  • Have you been to a brazillian-style steakhouse? How did you react? The first time I went, back when I didn't eat as much meat, my body freaked out. Like, I felt totally sick. This time, however, I had no problems at all (thanks to my paleo diet?) and made out like a bandit with no negative side effects!
  • If you've been to Chi - what's your favorite rooftop in Chicago? Seriously. I need to know!

A Superbly Parental Weekend

Pin It Print Friendly and PDF
This weekend, my parents came to visit. We toured around and showed them the ins and outs of our new city, and many drinks were had.

There was also pizza and filet mignon.

On Friday, my parents arrived just before dinner. My dad had a hankering for both pizza and beer, so thankfully, there are a few breweries in Grand Rapids that specialize in pizza.

One of these beers was called "Lil Sebastian" which, if you watch Parks and Rec, is amazing.

We ended up heading over to Harmony Brewing Company. We were seated immediately, and we proceeded to have a delicious meal.

They have some really delicious pizza combinations (sea salt and cracked pepper tossed arugula with feta and slices of thick prosciutto? Count me in!), but I did feel like their pizzas were slightly undercooked. Everything else was perfect, so I think it can be remedied by just asking them to leave them in an extra minute or two until they're crispy.

Afterward, we headed back home and watched our wedding video (we finally have it!).

The next morning, we started with a yummy brunch at Terra. As usual, everything was amazing. This is fast becoming a favorite brunch spot, regardless of city.

We went back to the house and gathered our things to drive to Holland for a beach and boating day. The weather looked great, so we grabbed our swim suits and set out.

By the time we got to Holland, the weather was still decent, but it slowly cooled down so that it was comfortable but not quite perfect for sunning. Darn you, June in the Midwest! We bundled up and took a cruise on the boat with my in-laws and sister in law.

Afterward, we all banded together to prepare a feast for 10. We made steaks, a big salad, and a delicious veggie dish that reminded me of a cheesy Ratatouille.

We drove home late that night and went straight to bed.

Sunday morning, we headed over to Cherie Inn, which is one of my new favorite breakfast places, too. It is a bit understated, which is what I like about it. The exterior and interior are both simple and somewhat traditional, but then the menu blows your mind with its interesting combinations, and the food is delicious.

Afterward, we drove around the city a bit to show my parents around. We drove to the east side and went to Reed's Lake to show my parents how easy it was to get from our city-living to some good old lake life.

Once my parents left in the afternoon, my husband reminded me that the US was playing in the World Cup. We decided not to get cable (we have done this in every place we have lived together so far), so we would need to head to a pub for dinner, beer, and soccer.

I donned my USA gear and we headed to The Green Well, where we found seats at the bar and had beer, dinner, and 95 seriously nailbiting minutes.

And that, my friends, is a wrap for the weekend! We're gearing up for another fabulous weekend with my cousin (the mixologist queen) who is coming to visit with her main squeeze!

WHAT ABOUT YOU?

  • Did you watch the game?
  • What's so great about your favorite breakfast joint?

Our Wedding - The Ceremony!

Welcome to the wedding! Our wedding, to be precise. As our guest, you enter a large, industrial warehouse on the Southwest side of Chicago. You are probably thinking, "Where the heck are we? Why did Carly and Justin drag us out to a random warehouse? This is crazy."

Upon entering the building, you are lead to a large freight elevator. Here, the first signs of a party begin. Gold orbs hang from the ceiling and the elevator is dimly lit.

When the doors to the freight elevator open, you finally understand what it's all about. You're in a huge, loft-style warehouse space with bright, natural light and panoramic views of the city of Chicago. To your left, you find seating for the ceremony. At the front of the aisle is a large, wooden cross, adorned with succulents.

As you take your place, you find a program on your seat. To the side, a man begins to play guitar.

And now the fun begins...

Just before the ceremony started, we were in a private room with our wedding party, parents, and grandmothers. Our pastor, Kurt, had everyone to put their hands on us and pray together for our marriage and life together. He encouraged us to enjoy every moment, and to allow the emotions of the grand occasion of marriage to sweep us away - whether that meant tears of laughter.

The musician began playing an instrumental version of The Beatles' "In My Life" as our favorite people in our lives began to walk down the aisle. Our Grandmothers were seated first, followed by our parents, both fathers in matching tuxes. Both mothers carry a simple glass vase filled with sand.

After our parents were seated, my future husband walked down the aisle.

Next, the processional continued with our groomsmen and bridesmaids!

Once our wedding party had made their way down the aisle, it was time for my dad and I to make the trek. If you read my post about the gift I gave him, you know that this walk was extra special. At this point, my nerves were a complete wreck. Despite being extremely calm for most of the day, a few events transpired to leave me in a very vulnerable mental place (a dog getting loose, running at me, then almost getting hit by a car, then getting locked out of the event space with my bridesmaids and having to find someone to get a key to let us in), so let's just say I was already shedding some tears before we even walked down the aisle.

Having walked my mother down the aisle, my dad had come back to stand next to me as we watched our bridal party walk down the aisle. Once my dad and I rounded the corner to make our own way down the aisle, I caught my first glimpse of how the ceremony space looked fully decorated, and it took my breath away.

My processional song started - an instrumental of "Here Comes The Sun" - and our caterer slash wedding extraordinaire, Donna, fixed my train as my father and I took our first steps down the aisle.

As we walked down the aisle, I felt myself almost immediately overcome with emotion. Making eye contact with our guests and seeing the encouraging and supportive looks on their faces made me start to cry. I could feel my dad, beside me, tearing up as well. I put my head on his shoulder as we walked and really leaned on him for support.

Seeing Justin before the ceremony really allowed me to cherish those moments of walking down the aisle instead of just being nervous about what he thought. It allowed me to really sink in my last unmarried walk with my father.

We got to the front of the aisle and my dad and I stopped. With tears in his eyes, he kissed me on both cheeks and, as he hugged me tightly, I rubbed his back. He looked me in the eyes, then turned and shook Justin’s hand. Then, he put my hand in Justin’s and took his seat.

Our pastor welcomed everyone and kicked off the ceremony. I felt like I was floating, and was willing myself to slow time down and enjoy every second. Behind Justin’s head, I could see the skylights that let sunlight pour into the room, and it truly felt like God was smiling down directly on us.

One of my favorite moments was when our pastor encouraged us to take a second and turn and face our guests, to look out on their smiling, supportive faces. They were all there for us, to celebrate our love and help us start our life together. There were a few faces in particular that stood out to me, but I wasn’t purposely looking for anyone – just soaking it in and seeing the people I loved!

Our pastor introduced my Aunt, who came up to do a reading. She read a passage from Romans that was absolutely perfect, and her wonderfully soothing voice made the reading even more powerful.

After a few more remarks, our pastor then invited our mothers to come up. Justin and I are from opposite sides of Lake Michigan – he is from Holland, Michigan, and I am from Chicagoland – so our mothers walked up with vases of sand from each shore. The pastor explained how the mixing of the sand symbolized the blending of our families.

Our mothers placed each vase of sand on a table at the front, and then hugged us. I was nervous that hugging my mom would make me start bawling, but I held it together. I think she whispered “You’re okay,” to me as she hugged me, which reminded me of exactly what she used to tell us as kids when we fell or banged a knee and were on the verge of crying. “You’re okay.”

Next, we each hugged our new mother in law. I will never forget my new mother in law whispering something like “My gorgeous new daughter in law.” I was so touched by it that I couldn’t even whisper anything back – it was all I could do to not start bawling.

Once the mothers sat down, it was quickly time for our vows. We chose to do vows that were a modernized and more emotional version of the traditional vows.

I was first. I really allowed myself to feel the depth of each word that came out of my mouth, to really experience it, and to really mean what I said. Within the first few lines, I felt my heart swelling inside me. Tears came to my eyes, and my voice broke.

I let myself cry through some of my vows, and Justin smiled at me and whispered, “It’s okay.”

I willed myself to pull it together, and finally, I did.  My vows suddenly turned from tear filled and broken voiced to joyfully confident. I could hear the change in my voice, and I felt like it was symbolizing my transformation from being alone as one person to being confidently and joyfully united with Justin. I felt his strength – and God’s – oozing into my heart and out through my words.

Justin’s vows were next. We stared into each other’s eyes as he spoke, and squeezed each other’s hands the whole time.

Finally, the big moment approached: the kiss. Our pastor had encouraged us to really go for it and not hold back – it is, after all, our first kiss as husband and wife. We had decided to let it be completely organic – we had not practiced the kiss, as most people do, or eve talked about it much. So, when the kiss finally came, I wasn't thinking about following a plan or doing anything in particular.  It felt like the most natural thing in the world. I will never forget that, while Justin never cried as I did during the vows, when I kissed him as my husband for the first time, his lips were trembling!

Finally, our pastor made the big announcement. We were husband and wife!! My sister handed me my bouquet with an enormous grin, and we took off down the aisle. Not quite running, the way we did during our rehearsal, but wanting to.

Back in our private room, I felt so utterly overjoyed. There was no more nervousness, no more tension, no more fear. I truly felt like I had just been fused by God to another person, and it made me feel complete, stronger, and full of confidence.

Once we got our bearings, my mom, bridesmaids, and brother all helped bustle my dress while my sister helped me take off my veil and switch to a small accent piece for the reception.

We signed our marriage license, with our Best Man and Maid of Honor as witnesses, and then waltzed into cocktail hour!

Weekend Things: 4th of July Weekend

Pin It Print Friendly and PDF

We kicked off the long weekend in the best way: Yoga. We drove up to the suburbs to visit my family and joined my mom for a yogathon at Fitness Loft on Thursday morning.

Long live America, the land of the free and the home of the yogis.

"It's early and I'm tired" face.
Note: My sock bun stayed in place all night! Winning.

After yoga, we proceeded to grill out (read: burgers. this is not called a barbecue, people. it is grilling out.) and lay out. There were a few beers consumed.

I tried to make a cake I found on Tone It Up (Not sure if it was their recipe or if they just posted it). Basically, you take a watermelon and lop off the top and bottom of the oval and then cut the center out, making it a "cake" like shape.

You're almost a cake, but deceivingly healthy. Keep doin yo' thang, watermelon.

The recipe called for cool whip, but I don't trust cool whip anymore (chemicals... blegh), so I went with good old whipped cream. Only whipped cream isn't the same as cool whip. So, while it looks gorg in this pic, it sort of... sagged. #ohwell #stilldelicious

You are so beautiful and festive. Get in my belly.

To be honest, my fiance and I spent most of the rest of the weekend laying out in our backyard (YES! FINALLY!). We are super blessed to have a fairly private back yard in the city with a lot of green space and a view of the Sears-I-Mean-Willis-Tower.

Our dog was in heaven because it meant she got to chill outside all flipping day. Sunbathing dogs are so precious.

Nose to the wind

Other things that happened (you know, besides tons of sunscreen and drinking sparkling water in the sun, which is obviously the highlight of life):

1. DRAAAAAAAAAAAANKSS. Cocktails. A few of them. At Farmhouse. At the Silver Palm (pictured -- and the best drinks of the weekend). At Grandview.

I seriously cannot rave enough about the cocktails at The Silver Palm and The Matchbox (they are next door and connected and serve the same cocktails, but The Matchbox tends to be more crowded so we hit up The Silver Palm). Their drinks are only $8 and they are delicious and strong. They also usually  bring you your own cocktail shaker with almost another full drink in it. All for $8, I remind you. #GOTHERE

The most delicious Gimlet I've ever had, and a Manhattan with seriously boozy cherries.

2. FOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD. More burgers. For my fiance. Not so much for me. (Pictured: Burger from Farmhouse with gouda and crispy bacon)

Fun fact: My fiance always asks for not just bacon, but "crispy bacon" on his burgers.
Some... uh... yogurt. With maple syrup and PB2. It looks gross, I can see that now. But it tasted so good.

Why do you look like brain matter?

3. WEEEEEEEEEERKOUTS. A long run. A spin class. Body pump. Another spin class.

Post-run, Pre-shoulder burn out.

Spin, spin, baby.
4. MAAAAAAAAKEUPPPPPPPPP. My makeup artist came over and we played around with some wedding makeup ideas. Lesson here? makeup is fun.

:
After playing with makeup, my fiance took me on a date (how could he not? i mean come on) to Oon, in West Loop. IT WAS AMAZING and I'm going to post pics tomorrow to make you jealous. :)

Everyone else... How was your weekend?!
