We're Getting Hitched!

Pin It Print Friendly and PDF

That's right, we're getting married! This weekend, my fiance fooled me by fabricating a fake story about our Saturday plans, proposing to me, bringing me to an amazing post-proposal photoshoot, and arranging to have our parents meet us for a celebratory shoot and dinner! Read the full story below.

Last weekend, my fiance fooled me by fabricating a story for our Saturday plans. We have plans to meet up with my parents, he said. They're in town for Christmas shopping, he said.

So, on Saturday morning, I took it easy. We cleaned the apartment (seriously, how did he know I would enjoy this day more with a clean apartment!?). Eventually, I started getting ready to hang out with his parents.

I was just finishing getting ready, folding the corners on a smooth and perfectly made bed, when Justin called for me from the other room. Carly, he said, come in here!

But, I'm making the bed, babe! Do I have to come now? After a beat of silence, I heard Yes! You should come now!

When I walked into the living room, Justin put his hands on my shoulders and told me to stand in the middle of the room and wait. He left for a moment, and I heard movement in the other room (little did I know that he had gotten me out of there so he could grab the diamond ring he'd stashed in the closet!).

When he returned, I still hadn't caught on. Finally, he said, This whole day has been a kind of misdirection. We're not actually going to meet my parents right now.

I tilted my head and asked, Okay, then what are we doing?

My future husband smiled and said, We're going to meet a photographer at the Kinzie Street Bridge to take pictures.

At this point, I had an inkling of what was going on, but I still wasn't sure. A moment later, I had my answer. He was down on one knee, my heart was thumping in my chest, and the next five minutes were a total blur. I had to ask him the next day what he actually said to me, so clearly my brain was so flooded with pure joy that it forgot to take notes! I love you more than anything. You mean everything to me and I want to be with you forever. Will you marry me?

The poor guy must have been scared to death for a moment, because my response was hardly a whisper. Yes. He tilted his head and asked, Is that a yes? I nodded and shouted it.

When he slipped the ring on my finger, it fit - perfectly.

A moment later (you know, after fixing my hair and texting my sister, crying), we were on our way to the most genuinely smile-filled photo shoot I've ever been part of. We took hundreds - actually, probably thousands - and were kissing in almost all of them.

An hour or two later - I lost every concept of time, so it could have been more or less - we went to one of our favorite restaurants called TWO. It's down the street from the new apartment we'd moved into together and was one of our favorite date night spots. The photographer came with us to take pictures of us as we sat at the bar - and then, all of a sudden, Justin's parents walked through the curtain, followed by my own parents.

We took a few more pictures, filled with clanking glasses and hugging and smiles, and then sat down for a wonderful dinner with both sets of parents. It was a perfect day - from the intimate, quiet proposal, to the photoshoot that captured our emotions on the day we got engaged, to the inclusion of our parents.

Does this guy know how to plan a proposal or what?

Justin worked with my Aunt to design the ring, and I think they did a wonderful job capturing my personality. The piece is entirely custom, vintage and modern at the same time, and with just a bit of flair. Definitely unique - and exactly what I wanted. It even has a small aquamarine, which is Justin's birth stone, embedded in the top and bottom of the ring.

Moving Time!

Pin It Print Friendly and PDF
This weekend, Chris graduated and we moved him into a new house. Then began the interior design process. Here's what we were working with before getting down to the nitty gritty in this crooked (seriously, guys) home...

Here's another bare bones shot after moving in the most precious cargo (i.e. his Mac Pros)...

Remember how I mentioned this place was crooked? Yeah, I wasn't joking! Please notice the insanely crooked line where the ceiling dips down as well as the crooked line action where the ceiling meets the wall.

The first order of business was to put up 10 dollar shelves from WalMart.  This isn't the largest room you've ever seen, so we decided shelves were a good way to get some additional decorating space without taking up floor space (and eventually they'll be a good place to house a basket or two, where Chris can stash his techy computer cords and such).

We needed a little help from friends (thanks, Katie & Jonathan) to get these shelves hung and put up some open weave curtains we found (also at WalMart, ten bucks!).

We had a really hard time finding Chris a bedside table that (a) wasn't hideous and (b) wasn't super pricey. And then we found this guy at Goodwill for $5 and Chris pointed to it and said, "What if we spraypaint it white?!"  Seriously? OF COURSE I think that's an awesome idea! Sorry, Chris. You've caught my affinity for wanting to spraypaint everything white...

On the longer shelf, we added a $1 crate from Goodwill, a painted 70s bus, some candles and a vintage camera. So far, these $10 shelves are turning out to be an AWESOME addition -- because we have added tons of memorabilia and decor that would otherwise have taken up space on a dresser (which he currently doesn't have).

As we were moving Chris out of his old house, we found this random photo-less frame and decided to grab it because, who knows, we *might* end up using it... And we did! Along with a camel, a box from an Urban Outfitters Bonsai tree, and a vase Chris's friend Mikey made...

Chris fell in love with batman shaped candle sconces at Goodwill (and again wanted to spraypaint them white... it's a disease, people!). To top it off, we added some art I recently made, a lovable monster named Claude, and some samurai swords (to make it manly, you know)...

On a Hobby Lobby adventure (they get me every time), we found a Chess decor section and totally totally totally love love loved a red horse...

So, because it was 50% off, we got it!

And so concludes the bedroom makeover (for now)!

Why "for now?" Chris plans to add a lot of art, I've got delusions of grandeur making a headboard, and we're still in search of drawer knobs for the bedside table, and an entire dresser to stand against the wall by the foot of the bed.

Running Music & Pinterest Fitness Inspiration

Pin It Print Friendly and PDF The intensity and duration of my run is often determined by my playlist.  Obviously, the type of song is really important... but I also have to change it up a lot because even a great running song gets old after enough mileage.  Here's what I've got goin' right now...

Playlist: "Pavement"
Adele- Rolling In The Deep
Skylar Grey - I'm Coming Home (Arion Dubstep Remix)
Rawnald Gregory Erickson The Second (Strategy Remix)
Miike Snow- Animal
Chris Brown - Look At Me Now ft. Lil Wayne & Busta Ryhmes
Adele - Turning Tables
Basshunter - All I Ever Wanted
Adam Tensta - They Wanna Know
Adam Tensta - My Cool
Usher vs. The Police "Lil' Freak, Roxanne" Mash-Up
Calvin Harris - Acceptable In The 80s
David Guetta - Gettin' Over You (Dubstep Remix)

There are also a lot of good workout tunes here, at "RCRD LBL."  They do a lot of mixes that make current music even better for hitting the pavement.

On a similar note, I have an entire Pinterest channel dedicated to Fitness Inspiration here.  In case you're skeptical, here's a screenshot...

Are you wondering what Pinterest is?  It's pretty much an internet bulletin board where users (or "curators") have the ability to "pin" certain photos on their "boards." It's part of my coffee-drinking routine...  Seriously you should trust me and start doing it.  You will thank me later.  Promise.

Why do I do it?  "Jus because" (haha, oh, 6-year-old me, you were so not clever).

My [Mom’s] Best Friend’s Wedding

Pin It Print Friendly and PDF
Kara, my mom’s best friend from the past 25 years, got married last night.  Guess who she married?  My mom’s high school prom date, Jerry.  No joke.  So, my mom’s best guy friend (Jerry) married my mom’s best girl friend (Kara).  How sweet is that?!  Guess where they met?  At my mom’s fiftieth thirtieth birthday bash my sister and I threw her two years ago.  Can we throw a party or what?

Words to describe the ceremony:   Intimate.  Casual.  Upbeat.

It was at a park, under a gazebo with a beautiful view behind.  Super casual.  Super beautiful.   Super awesome to see two people make each other so happy.

Before the ceremony, Jerry shared a moment with his boys.

The wedding party & new family!

Doesn't she look so excited!?
