Belated Birthday Weekend

Pin It Print Friendly and PDF

The weekend started with a road trip.

Proof that Oil Swishing is whitening my teeth...
We met up with my parents and headed to Dania to look at some furniture. My husband and I are in search of a couch that will mesh well with our Mid Century Furniture...

No, this was not the winner.
We ended up liking this charcoal couch with a lot of tufting.

Post-Dania, we were ready for a belated birthday dinner. We tried to get into Prairie Grass Cafe and Ruth's Chris, but ended up at Morton's Steak House, and let's just say that was an extremely fortunate thing because dinner was amazing. And so was the wine...

The next morning, my mom and I got ready to head down to U.S. Cellular Field for the NOCC Annual Walk/Run.

We had a 7am leave time, so we woke up around 6:15 and started with coffee. I have not been much of a coffee drinker lately, so I only had one cup, and made sure to have a banana with it to make sure my stomach wasn't wonky during the run.

We arrived a bit early and walked around to get a sense of the area, then did a warm up run and stretched. It was a pretty good day for a run, in the high 50s/low 60s with some wind. Perfect for a long sleeved run.

Once the run started, everything became a blur of excitement, as usual. We were able to run into and through U.S. Cellular Field as part of the course, which was awesome.

As soon as we entered the field, the excitement level peaked. I am not even a baseball fan, but I got a lot of energy and drive from being here.

The run then led us through the streets and back to its starting point. I had a good run overall, but my phone didn't tell me how close I was to the finish and I couldn't see it coming because it includes a turn around a corner, so I had a lot of steam left at the end because I didn't start sprinting until later. My final time was somewhere in the 25 range, but I haven't been able to confirm it on their web site yet.

After the run, we headed into the bar on site at U.S. Cellular and everyone had a beer. I changed my mind at the last minute for a bloody mary, and was not disappointed.

We left and headed back to my parents' house, where I got ready as fast as I could because my cousin and her boyfriend were coming down from Madison.

They are avid disc golfers (frolfers? discers?), and I am awful at it but always game for an outdoor adventure, so we headed to a nearby course to play. On our way home afterward, we stopped at a grocery store for some steaks and dinner supplies.

When we got home, Mint Juleps were the first order of business. It was Derby Day, after all, so we managed to celebrate it. My cousin is a master cocktail craftswoman, so we put her in charge of the drink making.

As we waited a bit before dinner, we sipped our Mint Juleps and played cards.

We were finally ready for dinner, and my husband hit the grill. We ended up with steaks, carrots, and corn.

We lit the fire pit in my parents' yard and hung out there for a while before hitting the hay.

Sunday consisted of a lazy morning, egg and smoked salmon breakfast sandwiches, and the drive back to Michigan.

When we arrived around 3pm, we were starving, so we headed over to a neighborhood bar for some food and...

of course...

another bloody mary.

25 Things I Have Learned On My Way To 25

Pin It Print Friendly and PDF
My birthday was yesterday. I thought I would "treat myself" to a day off and completely block off my calendar/to-do-list from any work-related obligations. I had no plans to write a blog post, no goals for working on my novel, and no ideas of getting consulting work done.

I don't know who I was kidding. That is so not me. I jumped out of bed, started working, went on a run, and ran errands. And you know what? It was a great day once I started moving.

Breakfast at DeBoer's

A 6 mile run while watching Alias and Veep

Flowers from my husband

More flowers from my parents

No-chip French Manicure

Dinner at The Reserve in Grand Rapids

Flourless Birthday Cake with Whiskey Marshmallow and Salted Caramel

In honor of my busy body, list-writing self, here are 25 things I have learned on my way to 25. These are my personal lessons, and definitely not meant to be my creed-to-the-people, so don't hate on me if you disagree, ya dig?
  1. Just because you're good at something, it doesn't mean you have to keep doing it. Figure out what kind of activities/hobbies/careers make you feel like your favorite version of yourself. Do those things.
  2. Write thank you notes. Send thank you flowers. When people love on you, find ways to love on them right back.
  3. Drink, eat, and consume full-fat everything. Quit it with that fat-free crap. It's not real and it confuses the heck out of your body.
  4. It is always worth it to take that extra 60 seconds and make the bed. Getting into crisp, folded sheets at night is so much better than a squirreley mess.
  5. Learn how to poach eggs to perfection. It is definitely a skill, but it's an impressive one to have.
  6. It's ok to eat pancakes, but eat some eggs too. Did I mention eggs?
  7. You don't have to stay friends with the same people forever. It's a good thing to try, but if they leave you feeling icky, it's not worth it.
  8. Make friends with your neighbors! I have never needed a cup of sugar, but I have certainly had some great late night cocktails with neighbors, and that's just as good (if not better!).
  9. Don't just run. Strength train too. Your legs (and booty) will thank you for it. So will everyone looking at them...
  10. Figure out what colors look good on you. Keep buying things in that color.
  11. Eyebrows are important, so give them some attention. Don't over pluck, over-dye, or over-color.
  12. Teeth are important, too. Keep 'em clean and oil swish!
  13. Crying is actually pretty awesome. Crying when you're happy can't be beat. Let yourself cry.
  14. When you do cry, don't wipe your eyes - pat them underneath, instead. Better for your skin, less raccoon eye madness.
  15. Invest in a nice "computer bag" that fits your laptop, chargers, some note pads, and your makeup comfortably. It will make traveling so much easier.
  16. Find a store that makes jeans that are most flattering to your body (for me, it's Ann Taylor LOFT). Keep going there.
  17. Learn how to cook a meal from scratch. It is really satisfying to create a delicious meal the whole way through, especially if you can do it without having to constantly reference a recipe.
  18. Be nice to the people at the post office.
  19. Tip well! You'll make someone's day, and they'll remember you (and serve you well) when you return.
  20. If you meet friends/significant others who you can be yourself around (you know, like you can belt out that song in their presence instead of suddenly wondering "crap, I hope no one heard that"), keep them around.
  21. It doesn't matter how cute they are, if those heels are "a little" uncomfortable at first, they will chew a hole in your foot by the end of the night.
  22. On a similar note... sometimes, a $25 pair of heels from Target are more comfortable than your $225 designer flats (I'm looking at you, Tory Burch).
  23. Drink more water. Like, always.
  24. There is no such thing as too many flowers.
  25. Take time to write. Don't just barf your thoughts into an email or Facebook message, actually take the time required to ensure you are saying what you intend to say in the most effective way you can. As one of my favorite quotes would put it, "If I had more time, I'd write you a shorter letter."

A Birthday and Milwaukee Visit

Pin It Print Friendly and PDF

Happy Monday to all! I hope your week is off to a great start, especially as we prepare to enter the hyped or dreaded (hyped for me, let's be real) Thanksgiving weekend!

On Friday night, my husband and I headed up the North Shore to visit my parents for the night. It was my dad's birthday weekend, and as you know, I do birthdays right.

We had cheesecake topped with raspberries and freshly melted chocolate (not pictured) and ate it in front of the fire. That is, after we finished devouring our filet mignon.

In true style for my family, we had a lot of conversation and ended the night with two episodes of House Hunters International in front of the fire. This is the epitome of relaxation in my mind!

The next morning, my mother did a little birthday decorating and fixed us a delicious breakfast.

Bacon and eggs = my ideal breakfast. Throw some breakfast sausage in there and you'll satisfy the men, too.

After a delicious breakfast, I headed to the basement for a workout. I ran about 5 miles, but started with an interval run for the first 15-20 minutes, then started stopping every mile to do 50 jumping jacks, 30 push ups, and a round of boxing. It wahttp://www.createliveblog.com/2012/02/fit-printable-boxing-workouts.htmls pretty similar to this interval boxing workout, except it was significantly longer, a little more running heavy, and also included jumping jacks and push ups.

Afterward, I showered and got ready to pick up some of my girlfriends and head for Milwaukee!

Once we arrived, our first order of business was to head to Lakefront Brewery. We had set up a 2:30 tour for our group, so we headed over a bit early to grab a beer before it starts (they actually recommend it!).

The tour was really neat and it was awesome to see the process and get a better understanding of how beer is made!

Afterward, we headed back to my girlfriends' apartment to have some appetizers and play Cards Against Humanity.

Around 7 or 8, we headed to AJ Bombers for dinner. This is one of those typical bar food places where you can write on the tables and crack open peanuts and drop the shells on the floor. Needless to say, it was an appropriately filling dinner for having attended a brewery tour in the afternoon.

We headed to a country bar (forget the name... sorry, my brain tends to remove all things country from memory... wink), where my friend rode the bull. I have never seen someone I know do it in person, but it is obviously a difficult thing to do!

Eventually, we made our way back to my girlfriends' apartment and crashed in beds and on couches.

I woke up fairly early the next morning to a scene that is oh-so-typical of girls' weekends: a mess of clothes, boots, and vera bradley bags. It only took us a few minutes to clean the entire apartment, though, which is a good thing because we were starving.

We headed out the door pretty quickly, so I ended up rocking this very questionable hair style. A top knot, falling off the side of my head, with its own built in alfalfa hair. It was large and in charge.

We walked over to Wolf Peach, which was a short 2-3 minute walk up a set of stairs.

It was decorated as a combination of rustic and industrial (kind of looked like a cabin/loft, if that even makes sense) and then topped off with some romantic accents, like this glass chandy.

I had a delicious (and huge) order of Chilaquiles with Chorizo, Avocado, and an over-easy egg. It totally hit the spot and filled me up. I also broke my coffee rule to guzzle some liquid gold.

After brunch, we braved the 17 degree cold to walk back to their apartment and pack up. We headed back to the burbs, where I dropped my girlfriends off and touched base with my parents before my mom drove me to the train.

WHAT ABOUT YOU?

  • Have you ever been to Milwaukee? What is your favorite midwestern city?
  • Do you have any birthday traditions? In my family, we always decorate the doorways and hang streamers and balloons for people to wake up to on their birthdays! The birthday person also gets to choose the meals for the day.

New York Pt 3 - Manhattan and My Birthday

Pin It Print Friendly and PDF

New York is a wonderful place for a girl to spend her birthday. We started with some delicious breakkie at Morning Star Cafe over on 2nd Street. I ordered a tomato, basil, and mozzarella egg white omelet and it was pretty much caprese in an omelet. So delicious.

God blessed us with an insanely beautiful day. Like, low 70s, sun shining, bright happy rays in sight. We hopped on the train and took it down to SoHo.

Right after getting off the train, we saw a C. Wonder shop. I've been lusting over their online store forever (and have made a few purchases, but mostly browsed), so I was surprised to see that they have a legitimate store. It was the perfect excuse to go inside.

Pretty much everything in this place blows my mind with beauty. It's like a modern twist on East Coast charm and I totally dig it. I snatched up a pair of white jeans and a super cute sweater while my fiance sat on the couch and flipped through this gem of a book...

After C. Wonder, we spent a while walking around SoHo and stopping into various shops. Mostly, I just want to take this whole neighborhood and put it in a snow globe. Except without the snow. Everything is just so pretty and happy. #MyCupOfTea

I knew that Chobani had a pop up restaurant in SoHo, so when we stumbled upon it, it wasn't much of a decision. We obviously had to visit. We got a blueberry and honey as well as a chocolate and pistachio and we were both quite impressed. They also let us take the glasses home, which is practical bribery in my book. You know... the good kind.

We also stopped at Silver Spurs to split a farmer's market salad. It was alright, but nothing to write home about. The beauty of the view over the intersection and park, however, was a different story.

After a bit more walking around, we arrived somewhere magical... for my fiance, who wears watches like it's none of his business. We had to do a little watch shopping and yes, he did make a purchase. Yes, we bought my fiance a watch on my birthday.

At this point, it's getting hard to remember the exact order in which we did things. We kept walking and headed over to Wall Street (did we walk there? maybe we took the train?). I was really surprised by just how dead that area was. Granted, it was a Sunday afternoon, so it's not like it was peak work hours. But, it still seemed pretty vacant.

We also headed over to Battery Park. They're doing construction there, so the park, itself, wasn't much of a sight, but the view over the water was pretty neat. My New York geography needs some work (I've mastered Chicago by now... New York is another story), but I did think the view out over Brooklyn was cool. Since we did the exact opposite (Brooklyn's view of Manhattan) the day before, it was a nice little flip flop.

The hilarious chalk writing outside Momofuku Milk Bar

As we were leaving Battery Park, we decided we were a bit hungry. We'd been walking all day and only split some Chobani and a salad since breakfast, so we thought we deserved a treat. Plus, I was the birthday girl, so really there was no need for excuses.

We were headed up toward Union Square anyway, so we decided to stop into Momofuku Milk Bar. It was hard to decide what to get. They have everything from Cookies (compost cookie, anyone?) to pie, milkshakes to soft serve. We ended up getting a slice of "Crack Pie" (with that name, how could you not?) and a cookie that had marshmallow in it (my fiance saw it at the counter and exclaimed "That one! We're getting that one!").

The cookie was definitely good, but what really blew my mind was the Crack Pie (how many search results hits am I going to get from crack pie references now? bring it on...). It's extremely buttery and reminds me of the butter cake I used to occasionally get in college. It was very thick and sticky and almost hard to cut with our plastic forks. So delicious. Please sir, can I have some more?

After checking out Union Square (pretty much just a big square filled with people and skateboarders... I was much more impressed by the milk bar, haha), we headed back uptown toward our hotel via Subway. But, instead of riding the train all the way up, we hopped out at Grand Central Station.

We've been to a few events at Union Station in Chicago (plus I used to ride in and out of that station when I first started working in Chicago), so I feel like I'm pretty used to grandiose train stations. Nonetheless, I was still quite impressed. The ceiling, in particular, is really cool. It's my favorite color of tealish turquoise (which one is it? can't tell), with golden mythical drawings on it, and tiny little white lights that occasionally peep through.

Finally, we headed back to the hotel. We dropped our bags and freshened up for my birthday dinner. We did some heavy Yelping and ended up deciding on The National. It had very mixed reviews on Yelp, which initially scared us despite the fact that we really liked the menu and the restaurant looked neat. After a bit more digging, we realized that the reason behind those mixed reviews was Geoffrey Zakarian, from shows like The Iron Chef and Chopped on The Food Network. He has a very strong TV personality, and most of the Yelpers were responding to how much they dislike him.

We, on the other hand, love strong personalities, so we were more than willing to give it a go. I got a bit fancier for the dinner, and snapped a pic in one of The National's co-ed bathrooms.

Naturally, I started out with a glass of champagne. What other way could I celebrate my birthday in New York?

We also ordered a charcuterie plate. I tell you, we're becoming charcuterie conisseurs, because my fiance insists on ordering it just about everywhere it's available. Occasionally, I can sway him to a cheese plate instead, but for the most part, we go for the meat. This time, we were not disappointed. The deli meat cuts in New York in general were delicious, but this took the cake. Generous portions and smoky flavors = yes.

For our meals, we got the steak frites (fiance) and the butternut squash risotto (me). The risotto is actually an appetizer, but it looked delicious so I asked if they could do it as a meal. It was totally satisfying.

Toward the end of the meal, my fiance mentioned that it was my birthday. They brought out champagne and a plate of whiskey chocolate mousse and mango sorbet to celebrate! I blew out the candle before taking this picture, but it's there. They also wrote Happy Birthday on the plate in chocolate. How cute!

After dinner, we were both quite full, so we decided we wanted to go on a walk. We had popped into Times Square on Friday, but only for a short visit, and we were there during the day. My fiance insisted that we visit at night (he lived in New York a while back, so he likes to play tour guide).

We headed over to Times Square and walked around. It seems to be even brighter at night time there, and I was amazed by how many people were there at 10pm on a Sunday night. Of course, all of the shops were open, too.

There you go, folks. Part 3 of our trip to New York.
