25 Things I Have Learned On My Way To 25

Pin It Print Friendly and PDF
My birthday was yesterday. I thought I would "treat myself" to a day off and completely block off my calendar/to-do-list from any work-related obligations. I had no plans to write a blog post, no goals for working on my novel, and no ideas of getting consulting work done.

I don't know who I was kidding. That is so not me. I jumped out of bed, started working, went on a run, and ran errands. And you know what? It was a great day once I started moving.

Breakfast at DeBoer's

A 6 mile run while watching Alias and Veep

Flowers from my husband

More flowers from my parents

No-chip French Manicure

Dinner at The Reserve in Grand Rapids

Flourless Birthday Cake with Whiskey Marshmallow and Salted Caramel

In honor of my busy body, list-writing self, here are 25 things I have learned on my way to 25. These are my personal lessons, and definitely not meant to be my creed-to-the-people, so don't hate on me if you disagree, ya dig?
  1. Just because you're good at something, it doesn't mean you have to keep doing it. Figure out what kind of activities/hobbies/careers make you feel like your favorite version of yourself. Do those things.
  2. Write thank you notes. Send thank you flowers. When people love on you, find ways to love on them right back.
  3. Drink, eat, and consume full-fat everything. Quit it with that fat-free crap. It's not real and it confuses the heck out of your body.
  4. It is always worth it to take that extra 60 seconds and make the bed. Getting into crisp, folded sheets at night is so much better than a squirreley mess.
  5. Learn how to poach eggs to perfection. It is definitely a skill, but it's an impressive one to have.
  6. It's ok to eat pancakes, but eat some eggs too. Did I mention eggs?
  7. You don't have to stay friends with the same people forever. It's a good thing to try, but if they leave you feeling icky, it's not worth it.
  8. Make friends with your neighbors! I have never needed a cup of sugar, but I have certainly had some great late night cocktails with neighbors, and that's just as good (if not better!).
  9. Don't just run. Strength train too. Your legs (and booty) will thank you for it. So will everyone looking at them...
  10. Figure out what colors look good on you. Keep buying things in that color.
  11. Eyebrows are important, so give them some attention. Don't over pluck, over-dye, or over-color.
  12. Teeth are important, too. Keep 'em clean and oil swish!
  13. Crying is actually pretty awesome. Crying when you're happy can't be beat. Let yourself cry.
  14. When you do cry, don't wipe your eyes - pat them underneath, instead. Better for your skin, less raccoon eye madness.
  15. Invest in a nice "computer bag" that fits your laptop, chargers, some note pads, and your makeup comfortably. It will make traveling so much easier.
  16. Find a store that makes jeans that are most flattering to your body (for me, it's Ann Taylor LOFT). Keep going there.
  17. Learn how to cook a meal from scratch. It is really satisfying to create a delicious meal the whole way through, especially if you can do it without having to constantly reference a recipe.
  18. Be nice to the people at the post office.
  19. Tip well! You'll make someone's day, and they'll remember you (and serve you well) when you return.
  20. If you meet friends/significant others who you can be yourself around (you know, like you can belt out that song in their presence instead of suddenly wondering "crap, I hope no one heard that"), keep them around.
  21. It doesn't matter how cute they are, if those heels are "a little" uncomfortable at first, they will chew a hole in your foot by the end of the night.
  22. On a similar note... sometimes, a $25 pair of heels from Target are more comfortable than your $225 designer flats (I'm looking at you, Tory Burch).
  23. Drink more water. Like, always.
  24. There is no such thing as too many flowers.
  25. Take time to write. Don't just barf your thoughts into an email or Facebook message, actually take the time required to ensure you are saying what you intend to say in the most effective way you can. As one of my favorite quotes would put it, "If I had more time, I'd write you a shorter letter."

Ten Things Tuesday

Pin It Print Friendly and PDF

1. DO YOU LOVE RYAN GOSLING? Then do not, for the life of you, watch "All Good Things." That movie will make you hate your life and Ryan Gosling at the same time. My fiance and I tried to watch it, and... let's just say he is creepy and, dare I say it, unattractive. Yes, that's right. I said it. It IS possible for Ryan Gosling to be unattractive. Sorry, girls. Also, did you know he is Canadian? I had no idea.

2. I've been so freaking lazy this past week. Like, just not wanting to work out. In fact, I pretty much just want to eat toast. So, in an attempt to GMST (Get Muh Sh*t Togetha), I put together a plan. I'm a total excel addict, so naturally this happened in excel form and became color coded. Speaking of being lazy, please note that I took three days off this past week. I seriously never do that. Naturally, this next week is a bit more intense than usual. We'll call it Operation GMST.

3. Can you believe I left my apartment and walked to work today with this hair do? I had to hop in and add this picture as soon as I got here and realized that I looked like a freaking rooster. My fiance didn't even notice as I walked out the door looking like a crazy person. What gives?

4. I'm a total follower. My friend Kelsey sent me this picture on Sunday...After which I promptly purchased Jillian Michael's "Hard Body" on Amazon. Planning to try it... eventually. Crap. Guess I'll have to fit it into Operation GMST.

5. Chia seeds. I'm obsessed. I like it with frozen berries. I like it with jelly. I like it with bananas. I like it with peanut butter. I like it with coconut flakes. Shoot. I just like it. Why does it taste so freaking good and make me so freaking full? I don't even want a morning snack between bfast and lunchie anymore. Planning to post another recipe this week. :)

6. Also... Kettlebells. Dying to try this workout. But am always a little too nervous to try it at the gym. Perhaps I just need to buy my own? (Here I come, Amazon...)

7. Feeling like you don't have much to offer? Maybe like you don't have the right credentials or you aren't as awesome as you think you should be? Check out this group of total 'losers' and re-evaluate how awesome you are. Ready, set, go: “Abraham was old, Jacob was insecure, Leah was unattractive., Joseph was abused, Moses stuttered, Gideon was poor, Samson was codependent, Rahab was immoral, David had an affair and all kinds of family problems, Elijah was suicidal, Jeremiah was depressed, Jonah was reluctant, Naomi was a widow, John the Baptist was eccentric to say the least, Peter was impulsive and hot-tempered, Martha worried a lot, the Samaritan woman had several failed marriages, Zachaeus was unpopular, Thomas had doubts, Paul had poor health, and Timothy was timid. That’s quite a group of misfits, but God used each of them in his service.” (From Rick Warren's The Purpose Driven Life).

8. Heard of Miracle Berries? Apparently, it's some kind of berry from Africa that, after being ingested, makes everything taste wonderful and sweet. Seriously? It sounds like a drug. I'm tempted to order it in tablet form (called "Miracle Frooties") and have a try. I mean... a berry that makes everything taste amazing for 1-2 hours? Shoot, I could finally finish the celery in my fridge...

9. Let's talk about GIRLS. Am I the only one that got totally sick of Hannah's mental issues? I feel like that show was on a hilarious path and then suddenly they decided to make her a new kind of crazy. Stick to one kind of crazy, people. That said... (1) I am super happy for Marnie, and seeing her face at the end as she stared at her lover was kind of heart string tugging because I totally know what it feels like to look at someone and be like... #damni'mlucky. But at the same time, UGH she is still so annoying. (2) Way to go Shosh. The moment when she suddenly screamed and stood up out of her chair during her fight with Ray was priceless. (3) Best line of the season? "I was always here." So, there IS someone who doesn't want her to clean up when she breaks a glass! That's what they were going for... right?

10. We're in the market for a new bed for Hazel, the dog. While surfing the net, as the kids say (ha), we stumbled upon this bed. WOW, that dog is happy. And so refined, with the fire in the backround. I'll bet he reads many leather bound books. I guess I should buy that bed because then MY dog will be that happy and refined, right?

Be My Bridesmaid? How To "Propose" To Your Wedding Party

Pin It Print Friendly and PDF

If you've been reading my blog in the past 3 months, you might know that I'm getting married. For some reason, until now, I haven't talked about it much in posts (other than calling Justin "my fiance" over and over and over again...). But, now, I've added a "Wedding" portion to this site, and will be talking about it a whole lot more!

I wanted to share what I did to "propose" to my bridal party. The way I see it, Justin had to put everything together for the perfect engagement - from designing the ring to orchestrating a photographer, from coordinating with our parents to duping me into thinking none of it was happening... so, why shouldn't I have to do some proposing, too?

Here are the basic tools I used:

I created a box for each of my girls. I wanted these boxes to symbolize my wedding, so I included a lot of natural elements along with some DIY touches. I hand stained the boxes to a very dark color, then laid a piece of lace over the top and did a layer of white spray paint, then a layer of silver spray paint to leave a very neat lace pattern on the top.

I am envisioning chalkboards being a big part of my wedding, because I love the old school vibe they give off. So, on the inside of these boxes, I hot glued a chalkboard. Because the phrase "Will You Be My Bridesmaid?" seemed too hard to fit onto the chalkboard, I opted to break the phrase into two parts.

I hand stamped "Be" and "My" onto two miniature bunting flags per box, then strung them on small blue and white twine that I hot glued to the top corners of the inside of the box lid. Then, I glued the chalkboards with the word "Bridesmaid" in the center of the inside of the lid.

How did I get the chalkboards to be such an awesome and fun shape? To be honest, this was just a piece of cardboard cut from a shoe box, which I then cut into the shape I wanted before painting over with chalkboard paint. But, it was the cheapest and easiest way to ensure I got chalkboard pieces that were exactly the right size.

As I mentioned, I wanted to bring in some natural elements to these boxes. I lined the  inside with one layer of thin burlap that I purchased from Hobby Lobby and one small layer of a gauzey/lace-like material that my sister had on hand. I thought it was kind of fun that, once you opened the box and saw the "Be My Bridesmaid?" question, there was still a bit of a "gift" to open.

I filled the insides with goodies, and no two boxes were exactly the same. I wanted some items to be in every box, but some items to be unique.

I included champagne corks to signify the celebratory nature that weddings have. Also, I love champagne, so it wasn't hard to collect the corks.

In some boxes, I included dark gray felt flowers to represent one of the important colors we are incorporating into our wedding as well as symbolize the fact that my girls will be carrying flowers as part of their bridesmaid job.

Some boxes also included a sample name card holder that is made from birch wood. I got a set of these at Anthropologie, and they really evoke the feeling of "the outside in," which is part of what I am hoping to achieve. Our wedding is going to be in a huge loft with a skyline view of the city, so we want to mix elements to combine the city life with nature.

Some boxes also included a CD of fun, girly, lovey music that I put together. It includes love songs from Disney movies, as well as more contemporary songs that are meaningful to Justin and me. I wanted it to combine the exciting feelings we have about love as children with the excitement I have about marrying the love of my life. I wrapped the CDs in blue and white graph paper, because I wanted to add another interesting visual element without adding any new colors.

Also, I included Scrabble Tiles that spelled out each girl's name (or a nick name, if applicable). This was my mom's idea, and I loved it, because Scrabble Tiles will also be making an appearance at my wedding!

All five of the boxes also included a set of four cards that I made, which were wrapped in the same blue twine I used to hang the "Be" and "My" flags. I printed these on some manilla folders I grabbed from my parents' den at their house. Basically, I cut those pages to be a print-appropriate size, and arranged all four pages to be about the size of a post card, so that they would all fit on one page and I could cut/separate them later.

Then, I glued thick, brown labels on the top of each card. The shape of these labels mimicked the shape of the chalkboard, and I hand-stamped the phrases "The Job," "The Girls," "The Dresses," and "The Timeline" on them.

I also used one of the fonts I'm using for my wedding. It's called Modern No. 20. It is also part of my Save The Date, so I am excited about the continuity there. It's the little things...

On the card "The Job," I wrote them a heartfelt note about why I wanted them there and what I wanted them to do. I didn't get strict or specific - I just told them that I loved them and that I wanted them to feel wonderful in their dress, to hold beautiful flowers, and to be there to support me as I marry Justin/

On the card "The Timeline," I just broke down the key dates that we have so far - things like an Engagement Party, Cocktails and Crafts Day, Bachelorette Weekend, Rehearsal Dinner, and Wedding Day. I kept it simple by putting the date, event name, and general location (like Chicago, IL or Libertyville, IL), so that they could plan ahead.

On the card "The Dresses," I put a description of what we're thinking to have them wear. I wanted them to know what to expect, so they could visualize themselves on that day.

On the card labeled "The Girls," I named each of my bridesmaids (so that they could start getting familiar with each others' names) and a short, silly, one sentence description about them. For my friend Kelsey, for example, I put "Most likely to give me a pep talk in baby talk," or something like that. The idea was just to keep things light and silly.

Finally, I closed the boxes. I gave two of these boxes out at a family party on the same day, so for those two, I tied some twine around them and added a hand-stamped name card.
