Salt-Free Mrs. Dash and Pre-Thanksgiving Thanksgiving

Pin It Print Friendly and PDF

Happy Wednesday! Or, as I like to think of it, Friday... because today starts the weekend, THANKS TO YOU THANKSGIVING! I am sure most of you are getting ready for the feast that is Thanksgiving Weekend (and maybe also Hannukah - either way, good food will be involved!). I am heading to Michigan this weekend to spend time with my husband's family and my brother, who is coming along.

This What I Ate Wednesday (and Fitness, too) post includes meals from yesterday and my workouts from the past week. Why do I post this? Because I have gotten questions before about whether I really eat the food I post (sometimes, yes... sometimes, no...) and how often I do the fitness regimens I post (and in what order).

I started the day
with a cup of Earl Gray
and a couple of gross vitamins.
(It rhymed... kind of)

I also had the second halves of two Quest Bars I had started earlier in the week.
I don't know why I do this to them, because they really are not as good once they've been open for a while (they get hard...even if saved in a plastic bag).
But, what's a girl gonna do?

My co-workers had a Worksgiving feast, so I loaded up on some naughties and nices:
-Buffalo Chicken Dip
-Chicken
-Cheesy Potatoes
-Sweet Potatoes

Dinner is unpictured because I got totally distracted, but it looked like this, except for the sweet potatoes. I actually had...
-a small barbeque chicken breast
-1/2 cup of sauteed mushrooms with salt-free Mrs. Dash
-1/2 cup of mixed normandy veggies with salt-free Mrs. Dash

Workouts:
Wednesday: 5 mile run while watching Nikita on my iPad (guilty pleasure)
Thursday: 30 Minute Abs from Jillian Michaels
Friday: 60 Minute Full Body Weights
Saturday: 20 Minute Interval Sprint + Circuit Workout (1 mile run, 50 jumping jacks, 30 push ups, 150 boxing hits, x 3)
Sunday: SKIP DAYYYYYYYYYYYY!
Monday: 5 Mile Run while watching Nikita (yeah girl)
Tuesday: Body By Science
Wednesday: 45 minute Stairmaster, 15 minute mat work

WHAT ABOUT YOU?

  • How was your week in workouts?
  • What is your favorite thing to eat for Thanksgiving?

Werkin It Out

Pin It Print Friendly and PDF

I went to DSW on my lunch break yesterday in search of a new clutch. No dice. What did I end up doing? Trying on a badass pair of heels.

Are these considered a weapon?

I was so tempted to buy them and wear them for my bachelorette party weekend, which is coming up this month. But that's when I realized: I already have a few badass pairs of heels that I haven't had a reason to wear yet. I guess it's time to bust those babies out.

Time to work those calf muscles...

Just because it's creepy looking doesn't mean you have to judge.

Wednesday: 15 minute Elliptical, 30 minute Treadmill
On Tuesday night, I had my first dress fitting for my wedding gown. Because I was out in the 'burbs, I ended up having dinner with my mom and sister and just crashing at my parents' house. In the morning, I finished watching The Bachelorette (seriously, when you watch it on Hulu, there are so many commercials that it's just like watching it live). After about 30 minutes, when I was on the treadmill, my mom came down and hopped on the elliptical next to me. It was too cute.

My "5:30 is too early for a wakeup call" face.

Thursday: Bodypump
I've been recording my Bodypump weights in a note on my phone. Ever since I started doing that about a month ago, I've been able to increase my weights in almost everything. I also now feel like a badass because I'm pumping more weights than almost everyone in the class. Lesson: You can lift more than you think.

I just take notes of how much I lifted, and how I felt. Then, when I'm loading up my bar for each track, I reference my notes. If last time was easy, I increase the weight. If it was "good," I typically increase there, too. If it was "good/hard," I leave it put. And if it was "very hard" (or sometimes just "FML!"), I might drop it down so I don't injure myself. That's my basic method right now.

And yes, this was followed by the Mean Green Post-Workout Smoothie.

Red in the face = happy runner

Friday: 7 mile run
I have a love/hate relationship with long runs (Note: Some of you think 7 miles constitutes a "short" run. You're super heroes. I'm not). When I am in the habit of making my runs last a long time, I enjoy them... but it makes me hungry angry hangry if I do too many of them in one week. I'm currently experimenting with eliminating gluten from my diet (more on that later - I started having allergic reactions to gluten - boo), so it's hard to find much that satisfies me, because all I want is a pretzel bun or pizza. I'm trying to incorporate longish runs about once a week, so that I keep my endurance but don't over-do it on my joints (or appetite).

Hot class + Hot outside = Lose the soaking wet shirt, woman.

Saturday: 20 minute run to The Mercury Method, Barre Fly Class, 20 minute run home
I used to either drive to The Mercury Method if it was an early 6am class, or have my fiance drop me off and pick me up if it was a later one (there is limited parking in the area). Lately, I've started running to the class. It's perfect because a 20 minute run gets my heart rate up, which keeps it a bit higher during the entire hot workout (it's 98+ degrees! yikes). Then, my run home tends to be part run, part cool down walk, depending on how exhausted I am from the class.

CXWORX tools

Sunday: Bodypump, CXWORX
Back to Bodypump. I love you so much, Les Mills.
I was also super excited for the CXWORX class. I used to go fairly regularly and saw great results, so I'm trying to keep this part of my Sunday routine. Thank God they're both in the same room and one right after the other! Makes it so easy on me.

Monday: 40 minute run
I had a pretty lame run on Monday night. I was major struggle town and alternated between a 6mph jog and a 4mph walk on a high (8-12) incline. I was in a bad mood and there was a lot of "Debbie Downer" talk going on in my head, and I'm convinced that those were the culprits.

Shoulder Burn-Out in Solitude in the Pilates/Yoga room

Tuesday: 60 minute Pilates class, Shoulder burn out
After the 60 minute pilates class, I did a shoulder burn out routine. Basically, I start with 10 lb weights and do a variety of shoulder exercises. When 10lbs is too much, I drop it down to 8lb. Finally, after I can't do that, I drop it to 5lb. It ends up with totally burned out shoulders and only takes 5ish minutes. Refueled with some protein after that.

Wednesday: We'll see!
My plan was: 20 minute run to The Mercury Method, Control Class, 20 minute run home. But, there's apparently supposed to be a crazy awful storm until later on, so I'm not sure if that will be do-able. I may end up doing my own workout in the apartment, just to avoid being struck by lightning.

Technological Malfunction (and Workout Schedule)

Pin It Print Friendly and PDF
It's been an interesting week in workouts. Other than the pictures I posted in my review of TRX classes, I only have one picture from this past week of workouts:

I'm trying to be positive here, but there is one thing that has been driving me nuts during my workouts. My Polar Heartrate monitor just flat out stops working. In the middle of a workout, it will suddenly show "00" for my heartrate (obviously wrong) or will say "Check heart rate transmitter!"

The monitor and strap? The strap is definitely too big, and tends to slide around a lot despite being on its smallest setting. But, if I am on a machine, the machine still picks up the data from my heart rate strap, even when the watch is showing no data. This leads me to believe that the culprit is not, in fact, the strap, but is instead the watch, itself.

So, what the hell is going on with this thing? It is so insanely frustrating to be in the middle of a workout class and have my heart rate monitor malfunction not once but twice in just a 30 minute class. Argh. Hence, I've taken no pictures of my workouts the last few days because I spend an unreasonable amount of time wondering if something is going to malfunction.

HAS THIS HAPPENED TO ANYONE ELSE?

Okay, moving on. Deep breaths. Chill out, Carly. Done and done. Here are my workouts for this week... (picking up just before I left off, since last week's workout post was on Thursday).

Wednesday: 60 Minute Stairmaster
Thursday: Bodypump Class, 60 Minutes
Friday: TRX Class, 60 Minutes
Saturday: Active rest - about 9 miles of walking
Sunday: Active rest - about 9 miles of walking
Monday: Extreme Cardio Class, 30 Minutes; 15 Minute Stairmaster Sprint; Body By Science
Tuesday: Pilates Class, 60 Minutes
Wednesday: (Planned) 4 Mile Run, Upper Body Weights

QUESTIONS:
  • Do you use a heart rate monitor or other fitness tracking equipment? Does it ever malfunction? Obviously, I'm having this problem. Hopefully, I can get in touch with Polar and resolve it.

GRATITUDE:
Dear Future In Laws,
Thanks for getting your son the Jawbone Up for his birthday. Suddenly, we are walking EVERYWHERE, which means I have an automatic HEALTHY excuse for an active rest day.
Love,
Carly

Diversifying Workouts - WOTDs

Pin It Print Friendly and PDF

Just like when you invest your money, diversifying workouts gives you the best returns. I think I did a pretty damn good job making that happen this week, for the most part. I did a hot pilates class at Mercury Method, a Bodypump class, a 6 mile run and abs class, a long bike ride, long run, aerobics, and a basic pilates class.

Does anyone else aim for diversity? I know it's hard to add diversity into your routine when you're training for something on the horizon, but from what I've read, it sounds like even people training for the marathon include different types of runs.  Let me know in the comments what kind of diversity you're adding this week!

Wednesday:
PM Mercury Method "Strength" Class with Lara

As I predicted, I loved the Mercury Method classes even more when taught by their creator, Lara. She was very intentional about walking around and fixing our poses and postures. I was totally surprised when I got home and my calorie counter said I burned 352. Before, I was typically burning between 180-210 in these classes (though the real benefit, I think, is more muscular than mere calorie burn during the class). Granted, this 352 does include my walk back from the train, but that was only about a 10 minute walk. So, I was pretty impressed by the number.

Thursday:
AM Bodypump Class

Lawd, how hard it is for me to wake up at 5:30 for a 6:00 workout class. So difficult. But still, so rewarding. I hadn't been to Bodypump in probably about a month, so it felt really hard. Like, I felt like a total beginner again (almost). I'm pretty excited to go again tomorrow and see if I can build my strength back up.

Friday:
6 Mile Run and 30 Minute Abs Class

I mentioned that I haven't been running as much lately. I'll explain more about it later, but I realized that the frequent long runs were actually not making me look or feel any better. Instead, they were kind of depleting my nutrients and making me ravishingly hungry. So, I took a break, and am working them back in with more moderation. Friday's run was just short of 6 miles in just over 60 minutes, including a walking incline warm up and cool down, some basic tempo running, and some 8.5mph sprints. I paired it with an abs class that was pretty easy after the Mercury Method classes.

Saturday:
1 hour 40 minute Bike Ride

I had really wanted to take a spin class at the gym on Saturday, but after a leisurely breakfast, my fiance convinced me to take a long bike ride through the city to the lake. It was definitely a fun and interesting ride (still terrified by riding through traffic), but I didn't feel like I got nearly as much of a workout as a spin class would have afforded me. Total calorie burn rang in at 350. Lame.

Sunday:
1 hour walk with intermittent sprints

On a whim, we ended up driving out to the suburbs on Sunday for Church and Easter fun. By the time we got back home and finished some errands, it was kind of late. Instead of hitting the gym at 8pm we decided to go on a long walk. I went on a few sprints, but mostly just enjoyed a leisurely walk with my man and pup. It was pretty awesome.

Monday:
30 Minutes At-Home Cardio

This was honestly kind of lame of me. I got too tired for a real workout, so I simply did some fun aerobics while we watched The Americans. I created two circuits and did each of them twice, then called it a day.

Tuesday:
AM 60 Minute Pilates Class

For some reason, making it to a 6:30 class was much easier than the 6:00 time slot. I was thrilled that the class was pretty empty, so it was enjoyable. I got to watch the sun come up all the way during the class. Bingo. Reaganing. Winning. Duh.

Wednesday:
3 Mile Speed Run, 60 Minute Pilates Class

I'm planning to get to the gym a bit early to do a speed run and power it out. The pilates class I love and enjoy going to has now changed from a 45 minute class to a 60 minute class. Hey, more ab work for me! Can't complain.

QUESTIONS:

  • Do you diversify your workouts?
  • What's your favorite workout to do?

GRATITUDE:
Dear body,
Thanks for letting me try lots of different workouts. I'd appreciate it if you started responding to them, because you're awesome when you do that.
Love,
Carly

Getting Hot - Yeah, it's a Pun - WOTDs

Pin It Print Friendly and PDF

Guys, I got really hot this week. Yeah, that's right - I'm punny this morning.

Nonsense aside, this week was way different than my normal workouts. In fact, if you were to compare it to previous WOTD posts, you'd think I were a different person. Why? I didn't run once.

Workouts for the week! Never mind "At Home DVD," because there was no DVD involved... just dance moves.

Wednesday
Skip
Despite having the best intentions to start my Mercury Method deal last Wednesday, I just couldn't kick whatever cold or virus was attacking me. I ended up eating almost a whole pizza and sleeping all day. Seems fair, right?

Thursday
Self-Guided Cardio - 45Minutes
Wearing a heart rate monitor, I burned about 400 calories in my living room just jumping around and... well, dancing. My fiance and I were watching The Americans and I grabbed a jump rope, put my shoes on, and started moving. Not the fancy, fluid, perfect moves of a Zumba instructor. No, this was much more... uh... raw. I was pretty much doing it Liz Lemon style...

Friday
Mercury Method "Strength" Class [Instructed by Natalie]
I finally started my 6 Day Mercury Method deal on Friday and it was... well, glorious. As it turns out, I'm pretty sure that this Strength class I started with is my least favorite of the three classes they offer. That's by no means an indication of how bad this class is... just an indication of how great the others are. Also, this instructor has a beautiful British accent. Doing a workout in almost a hundred degrees while being told what to do by a Brit? #Reaganing

Super Red-Faced thanks to The Mercury Method

Saturday
Mercury Method "Stamina" Class [Instructed by Meredith]
On Saturday, I tried Mercury Method's "Stamina" class and thoroughly enjoyed it. I took a "Before" picture with the intention of taking an "After," but my brain was in such a calm state after this class that I didn't even remember to take one.

Yeah, I was that girl who takes a selfie in the bathroom.

Sunday
Mercury Method "Control" Class [Instructed by Jacob]
So far, this was my absolute favorite class. I was extremely sweaty, but three glasses of wine the night before and too much coffee the morning of could also have contributed to the sweat. My body was in serious detox mode.

I've mentioned a few times that I'll be doing a Mercury Method review... and I know you're probably thinking "Aren't you pretty much doing that now?" Well, the answer is no, I'm not. I actually have a bit more detail about the classes and the instructors to share later, once I've tried them all (I have yet to try the instructor who designed these classes, Lara - that's today's class). So... wait for it.

Anyway, Jacob was insanely helpful and walked around correcting form and fixing posture and making sure everyone was kicking their own ass. It was perfect and I left extremely satisfied.

Monday
Mercury Method "Control" Class [Instructed by Natalie]
After loving Control on Sunday, I was pretty pumped to go back to Control on Monday. It was the only time I could make, so I didn't have much of a choice, but I figured it would do double duty on my abs. It did not disappoint. I was on fire.

Tuesday
Ab Ripper X
We had a Potluck with a group of other engaged couples at our church, so I didn't have time to hit up Mercury Method. I got home at about 4:30 and we had to leave by 5:45, so I busted out an Ab Ripper X video (courtesy of P90X) and finished prepping what we were bringing (Chickpea-based Cookie Dough Dip).

Wednesday
Mercury Method "Strength" Class [Instructed by Lara]
I'm pretty pumped to go back to Mercury Method today, because I will finally be taking a class from Lara. She's the badass who opened this place and designed the workouts, so I'm expecting it to be even more amazing with her at the helm (yeah, Lara, if you're reading this... get pumped! and be nice to my wrists...).

What about YOU?
  • Have you ever tried "Hot" room workouts? What did you think of them?
  • Have you ever used a limited time deal to kick start your workout regimen?

AND NOW FOR THAT GOOD OLE' GRATEFULNESS:
Dear Body,
Thanks for not only being 'okay' when I totally change things up on you, but for actually responding WELL to it. You make me want to be a better... man. Err. Woman.
Love,
Carly

Meeting Your New Years Fitness, Nutrition, and Organization Goals

Pin It Print Friendly and PDF After yesterday's post on 3 reasons you should re-frame your new years resolutions, I had a few of you write in to ask me what mine were, and how I am planning to accomplish them.

I've made a few resolutions, but I have found that this early January societal tendency to make goals is really just a (good) excuse for me to make some serious strides toward things I already wanted to do.

So without further delay, here are my goals. Some of these are goals that I know I can easily hit but just want to be accountable for, while others I find more difficult. I've marked them with difficulty levels (based on my own habits).

  • Organization: Organize a calendar/planner and keep it up to date with daily tasks, appointments, social activities, and workout schedules. (Moderate- I'm good at starting these, but tend to go through spells where I neglect the calendar entirely)
  • Fitness: Work out at least 5 days a week, aiming for six. Make at least 3 of those days include a class at the gym, and include one day of yoga at least every other week. (Easy - This is already a habit, but I want to be more accountable for it)
  • Nutrition: Do the math to figure out how many calories I should be healthily consuming, then make a plan to intake those calories through balanced meals, and stick to it. (Moderate - I'm sometimes great at this, sometimes not so great.)

I'm sure there are many of you who have the same (or similar) goals as I do. To make it easier for myself to achieve these goals and to help those of you who have similar goals plan your method of attack, I've defined my methods for making each of those goals happen.

Organization Methods:
I bought a wonderful planner/calendar from Target. It's small enough to easily carry around in my purse. When you pick a planner, take a serious minute to look through it and make sure it has what you need.

Mine has a large view, which lets me make multiple notes per day (see below, top right). It also has a monthly view calendar before each month, so that you can see your "month at a glance" (see below, bottom left). I use this to keep track of my big items, such as trips, so that I can see what's coming up. Also, before each month, there are two pages for notes (see below, bottom right). This is a space for me to do a few things. on the left, I write my goals for the month. If there are a few big items I'm planning to tackle within that 30 day period, that's where I put them down. Then, on the right, there are enough lines for me to keep track of my nutrition, so that I can keep an eye on how I'm eating.

I also color-coded these (see the other image below). For now, I have Blue = Appointments, Pink = Workouts, Green = Blog/Consulting Tasks, and Yellow = Social.

Fitness Methods:
Part of my methodology for this goal goes hand in hand with my organizational goals. I'm making a plan, a few weeks in advance, about which days I plan to work out and which days I plan to take classes. I am aiming for 6 days of workouts per week, with the understanding that it is possible that one of those days will end up being a bust because of life's grand surprises.

As of right now, my general schedule is:
Monday: 30 Minute Full Body Blast (low weights class), and Body By Science (heavy weights routine)
Tuesday: 45 Minute Cardio, on my own
Wednesday: 45 Minute Cardio, on my own, OR Yoga (class)
Thursday: Bodypump (low to medium weights class)
Friday: 20 Minute Cardio, on my own, and CXWORKS (abs class)
Saturday: Spinning (class), OR skip
Sunday: Bodypump (low to medium weights class), OR skip

I'm keeping track of this by putting my plan for each week on my calendar and color-coding it, so that it's easy to keep track of at a glance. My color for workouts is PINK!

P.S. Looking for fitness advice and routines? Check out my fitness page.

Nutrition Methods:
Using an online calculator, I calculated the amount of calories I should be eating each day to maintain my fitness level with the amount of activity I currently have. Then, I planned out meals to equal the adequate level of calories, including lots of fiber and ruffage, proteins, healthy fats, and somewhat limited carbs (but not cutting carbs or strictly limiting them, because that's not how I roll; plus, then if I ever add them back, we could have a problem!).

As of now, my general meal schedule is:
Breakfast: Scrambled eggs, using half egg whites and half eggs with yolk. Include spinach, turkeyroni, feta cheese, and other veggies. Cup of coffee with Coconut Milk
Morning Snack: FiberOne 90 Calorie Bar, or other lean protein bar
Lunch: Large salad with spinach/arugula, onions, cheese, avocado, and assorted veggies. Optional Quinoa side, every other day.
Afternoon Snack: Fruit, such as banana or apple. Optional string cheese.
Dinner: Lean meat (such as chicken or fish) with steamed or raw vegetables. Optional glass of red wine (only one glass!).

I'm keeping track of this, primarily, by prepping meals ahead of time. If you're looking to do something similar, check out this post on preparing your lunches and dinner for the week all within one hour. Or, find a multitude of healthy recipes here.

Fit | 8 Tips For Effective Workouts

Pin It Print Friendly and PDF

Raise your (figurative) hand if you either made a new years resolution to get in shape or know someone else who did! If you've made it this far, you've (almost) gotten through the month. But now comes the hard part. Most people who make those resolutions fail as the calendar changes from January to February. Not for you. No, sir (or ma'am).

You might already be meeting your nutrition goals [hmm, maybe by downloading the Fitness and Nutrition Plan (Free Printable)], but there's a lot to be said for whether you'll be able to meet your workout goals.

Here are 8 tips to keep your workouts effective and fun to avoid losing your enthusiasm for working out (because, let's be honest, it can be boring or dreadful if you're not doing it right).

  1. Jump Rope.
Invest $3.99 in a standard issue jump rope and jump rope during commercial breaks. Make sure there aren’t any breakables in the way…
  2. Make it a date.
Work out with someone! It can be the same person every time… or you can have a Monday workout buddy at the Gym, a Wednesday workout buddy to meet for yoga, and a Saturday workout buddy to go for a run… Just make a date with a girlfriend or buddy and commit to it. It’s harder to skip a workout when you know there’s someone waiting for you.
  3. Be high maintenance.
Make your environment enjoyable. When I’m doing a workout video like P90X Yoga or Jillian Michaels’ No More Trouble Zones (Weights), I will set up my fan so that it blows perfectly on me, set out a cup of ice cold water with lemons in it, and light a few candles. Yes, seriously.  The fan keeps me cool and precludes massive amounts of sweat from dripping all over; the lemon in my water cuts down on the crap in your mouth while you work out and also encourages me to drink more of it as I work; the candles make the lighting feel softer and makes working out feel like a special occasion. It should!
  4. Get a good warm up.
Despite your instincts, don’t skip your warm up. Don’t “phone it in,” as Jillian Michaels would say, by half-assing it. If you have a stellar warm up and begin your workout on a good level, it sets the tone for the rest of your workout by getting you focused and in the zone. When you’re working out with a friend (see number 2), you might be tempted to half-ass the warm up while you finish talking about what Suzy said at work yesterday or why you think you need new glasses… don’t. Like any good date, you need boundaries. This is one of them. When the workout starts, especially at the beginning, you both get in the zone. That’s not to say that talking is prohibited – it’s not – but make sure your focus is the workout first, talking second.
  5. Eat breakfast.
Really. By doing this, you will see the results of your workouts much faster. It fires up your metabolism at the beginning of the day so that your body begins chomping through those calories starting from the first hour of your day. My philosophy is Breakfast like a King, Lunch like a Peasant, Dinner like a Beggar. That would be an inverse triangle. Consume more calories earlier in the day to get your body in fat-burning mode and keep from getting too hungry later on as a result of lack of calories (how many of you have thought you were doing a good job all day by half starving yourself, only to reach 8pm and suddenly turn into a snack monster?).
  6. Confuse yourself.
Well, your muscles, that is. Don’t do the same workout every day. Include various types of exercise. Include cardiointerval training, weight training, and yoga.  Stick in a day of boxing here and there.
  7. Get hyped
...for your workouts by doing a 4 minute Tabata workout before you begin. This high-intensity workout leaves you full of energy and ready to attack your next workout.
  8. Watch T.V....but not from the couch! Try this cardio circuit while watching a T.V. show to keep it fun and get in a good workout while watching your favorite show.
