GIVEAWAY - Breathslim Breath Training, Oxygen Training for Weight-Loss

Pin It Print Friendly and PDF
You work your muscles. You work your mind. Why not work your lungs, too?

**Heads up: if you want one of these, I'm giving one away as well as providing a 20% off code! Just keep reading until you see more red text!**

I was contacted a while back by Breathslim, a company that created a breathing training product. Their web site touts a respiratory trainer made of plastic that uses the power of air and water to make big changes to your life. According to Breathslim, the training improves your "health, your well-being and your lifestyle."

I am all about stretching my mind and training my body, so I figured I had nothing to lose. Overall, here's what I thought:

I felt calm after using it. I was advised to do this close to bed time, as it can relax you quite a bit and get you in a calm state. It truly lived up to its name - no pre-bed jitters, no extra energy, nothing! Just calm and peace.

I had wonderful, deep, restful sleep. SERIOUSLY. It was like I took Tylenol PM or something. I slept SO well and felt very rested in the morning.

Additionally, this is supposed to be able to ease anxiety, help with weight loss***, and improve your energy the following day.

GET YOUR OWN!
The product costs $49 and has a 30 day guarantee (i.e. if you don't love it like I do, you can get your money back). But, if you want to try it now, readers of my web site can get 20% OFF of the product.
Visit Breathslim via this link to purchase your own Breathslim for 20% off using this code:
"CLIVE-20"

ENTER THE GIVEAWAY!
Giveaway for one full kit of Breathslim will end on Monday, October 20th.

The Breathslim was extremely easy to use. Depending on the level you are working at - beginner, intermediate, or advanced - you fill the plastic cup with water to the appropriate line and then breathe through the tube for 15-20 minutes. I have only used beginner so far, which is actually the highest level of water.

The exercise comes when you breathe in an out, battling the water bubbles to get your air past them. I did this sitting up while watching TV before bed, and it got me into a very relaxed, almost meditative state.

Final thoughts? I absolutely loved doing this and will probably continue, if I can get myself to keep it as part of my routine.

WHAT ABOUT YOU?
  • Are you going to try it out?
  • What do you do to prepare for sleep?

Meez Meals

Pin It Print Friendly and PDF

Have you ever had the desire to make a gourmet, home-cooked meal? Then, that desire is promptly squashed when you look up the ingredient list and realize you'll have to scour the grocery store in search of everything on the list, most of which you only need a tiny bit of, only to be stuck with extra ingredients that will go to waste?

Never fear. Meez Meals has solved your problem.

I was recently contacted by Meez Meals and offered a few free home-delivered meals. They have a lot of options, and I was able to choose items that were gluten free. None of the options included meat, so my husband immediately said to count him out... I got crafty and solved that one (see below).

The way Meez Meals works is that you select meals to have delivered, and then they deliver you all of the fresh ingredients as well as the directions for cooking. I actually selected three meals:
  • Gluten-free sage and fig glazed pasta with spinach, kale, and crispy fennel
  • Sriracha toasted brussels sprouts
  • Tomato and goat cheese dip with chick peas and foccacia bread
When the box arrived, I started on the pasta, but put the brussels sprouts in the freezer for later and saved the goat cheese dip for later that week in the fridge.

The directions were very easy and clear, and solved a lot of problems for me by telling me the best order in which to do things to be most efficient. The labels on each item were very clear and they made sure to package the right amount of each ingredient, so that there was no measuring required (if you know me, you know measuring is basically the bane of my existance).

It took about 15 minutes of work and I ended up with a delicious, gourmet meal. I fixed my husband's meat problem by cooking up and adding a chicken sausage to his.

Ding ding ding! Dinner's done!

Workout Wednesday - WOTDs

Pin It Print Friendly and PDF

Wednesday:
5 and a half mile run & 45 Minutes of Pilates
On Wednesday, I made it to the gym for a lunchtime run. Instead of walking, I took the trusty VW to the gym, which meant I could get there, fit in a decent run, and make it back all within a reasonable lunch hour time period. My company allows me to work from home sometimes, so on this particular day, my schedule was perfect (since my gym is closer to my apartment than my office).

Running on my lunch hour meant I would watch just about anything I wanted, because the place was almost empty, so there wouldn't be creepers everywhere watching my screen. I ended up watching an episode of the World Without End Miniseries, which is based on a Ken Follett book. Let's just say there are a few... graphic scenes in that show, so a lunch time run was a great time to watch it.

Thursday:
You know the drill. I love me some Bodypump. I also love when my hair still looks good after a workout. So rare, but it happens a lot with Bodypump. It's a lot of hard work, but you're not running or doing a lot of hopping around, so your hair tends to stay in decent shape. The sweat level does necessitate some dry shampoo, though...

Friday:
15 Minute Stairmaster, 30 Minute CXWORX, 40 minute Light/To-Tempo run with Netflix
This was the day I got my special new toy, a heart rate monitor. I'll save my explanation of Polar HRM vs Garmin GPS for another day (really, I think it's preference, but for my workout habits, I have a legitimate argument for HRMs... stay tuned). I know, so much suspense. Not.

Anyway, I'd done a 15 minute stairmaster workout and CXWORX before work, but then the awesome toy arrived. Once that toy arrived in the middle of the day, I was itching to try it out, so I went back to the gym.

Thank God for Netflix, which provided the entertainment for the run. The picture below may actually be from a different Netflix run (they are frequent!), but you get the gist. My current Netflix running shows: Alias and World Without End. I'd love to watch 30 Rock on the treadmill, but my fiance and I make a point to only watch that together. That's love, people.

Saturday:
20 Minute HIIT
This was hardly a workout, to be honest. I'm calling it HIIT, but it really just meant that I ran out of time before my cousin arrived on the day of my Speakeasy Party (to help me set up this awesome spread!), so during the 20 minutes before she got into town, I put something on TV and did jumping jacks, jumping rope, and pretty much jumped around like a total freak. My fiance was giving me some interesting looks.

Sunday:
Skip
I was tired. So tired. The Speakeasy party had me up until like 3am, which is pretty rare for me. And, to be honest, the alcohol consumption was just enough to discourage me from doing anything strenuous. This day consisted of going with my cousin for her to try on Bridesmaids Dresses at J. Crew, getting Fro Yo, taking a long nap on the couch, and watching the Superbowl while eating pizza on the couch. Yeah. At least we were enjoying ourselves!

Monday:
6 Mile Calorie Burn Run, Body By Science (Weights)
On sort of a whim, I decided to plan out my run (I rarely do this) and stick to a commitment to run on the treadmill until my fiance showed up. I got off work an hour earlier than he did on Monday, so I was at the gym by 5, and he typically doesn't get there until about 6. That meant I had an hour to kill before he arrived for us to do our weights routine together.

I came up with this workout and was actually really thrilled with it. By breaking everything up into mile long sections, I was able to create smaller goals for myself to work toward during the run, which made it much more enjoyable. It also meant that I burned a motherload of calories, since I was challenging my heart rate and making it rise up and lower down using intervals.

During the interval periods, I alternated between a sprint for .2 miles and standing on the sides of the machine for .05. If you add it all up, that means I really only ran 5.6 miles instead of 6.0. I don't mind it, because my body really did need those breaks during the sprints (especially since there isn't a break directly following the sprints; there's a jog). If you're trying this workout and want to actually run all 6 miles, I'd suggest lowering the pace to a walk (4.0ish) or slow jog (6.0ish) in between the interval sprints.

Tuesday:
30 Minutes Upper Body Weights, 50 minute Spin Class
One of my coworkers teaches classes for the gym group I go to. He was teaching a Spin class at a nearby gym, and two of my other coworkers were going to it, so I hopped on the bandwagon. It was an awesome and sweaty class. I tend to judge the value of a Spin class based on how red my face is when I get out. It's a very scientific measurement, I promise.

Wednesday:
I'm planning to go to 45 minute Pilates.
Getting a run or some weights in after would definitely be good, but honestly, I seem to walk out of that Pilates room in such a calm state, that sometimes I just can't bear to ruin it by getting pumped up again. If you know me, you know I'm very rarely even keel and calm (I'm usually kind of bouncing off of the walls), so when I chill out, I like to cherish it. We'll see how it goes :)

 Your Turn:
  • What was your favorite workout this week?
  • WHAT SHOWS SHOULD I WATCH ON NETFLIX/HULU/HBOGO DURING MY LONG RUNS? Seriously. I need your help!

The Gentle Bath Company Giveaway!

Pin It Print Friendly and PDF
There's something about pampering yourself that makes the world feel like a softer, gentler place. Whether you're treating yourself or a loved one, the gift of care and pampering says, I love you. I appreciate you. You matter to me, and I wish for you to feel comfort and joy.

The weekend before I got engaged, I planned a special date weekend of pampering and fun for my soon-to-be-fiance. It even culminated in me fake-proposing at Cite, on the 70th floor of Lake Point Tower (Little did I know that he would be proposing to me not even a full week later. We were just on the same page, I guess!). Anyway, part of my gift to him was to set him up for his first massage at Lillie Ann's in West Loop. He absolutely loved it, and I think it made him feel surprisingly relaxed and special.

Sounds like the perfect gift, doesn't it? :)

Well, go figure... I have a wonderful giveaway for you today! Brenda from The Gentle Bath Company contacted me to set up a Valentine's Day Giveaway. That's right. She doesn't even know you, yet she wants to give you free stuff! What on earth could be better?

Cardio Mash Up Workout - Free Workout Printable - Burn 600 Calories

Pin It Print Friendly and PDF
If you're like me, you get bored. Sure, you could probably stay on that elliptical for longer -- if you wanted to. But you don't. And you get bored. So you leave.

Nevermore, my friends. This is the ultimate workout for people with exercise A.D.D. You won't have to be on any machine for longer than 15 minutes, and you won't have to do a single thing for longer than 5. You can do anything for just 5 minutes, right?

This workout specifies which machine to be on and breaks each 15 minute machine segment (treadmill, stair master, elliptical, bike) into 5 minute chunks. Try not to take breaks in between machines, other than a very short stretch if you're feeling too tight or a sip of water.

Before I give you the workout, here are a few additional tips:

  • Be honest with yourselffocus on the perceived exertion/difficulty level. If the workout specifies that you should be pushing yourself to about 90%-100%, then force yourself to work that hard.
  • Don't stress the hard partsEach 15-minute segment starts out moderately difficult and ramps up, ending with the most difficult part of that segment. Don't worry - just keep in mind that, as soon as you get off that machine and start on another, it'll start over again and things will get easier (at least for a few minutes!).
  • Mind the order: If you can't manage to do these segments in the specified order, it is okay to change the order up. That said, it is designed this way for safety, to protect you from mistakes and joint damage that can result from fatigue, so keep that in mind.

Without further delay, here's your workout! Click on the image to enlarge and print!

Fitness Monday, A Week in Workouts, and Free Workouts

Pin It Print Friendly and PDF

Happy Monday!

Time for another workout weigh in -- no, you don't have to actually weigh yourself. We're weighing our determination, dedication, and willpower here. First, before you look at what you did, you've got to nail down what you needed. What is involved in fitness? Let's compare notes...

A successful week in workouts should hit most of these aspects of fitness. I don't say all because I recognize that there are a lot of things to incorporate and there's a chance you're hitting them overall but not everything in one week. A good goal to shoot for would be hitting all of these aspects at least once every two weeks.

I usually give you guys a list of workouts, but this time I'm going to match them with what aspects of fitness they're successfully working on!

A Week in Workouts:

Monday: Skip
Tuesday: 1 Hour Boot Camp (Cardio Weights Circuits)
Strength, Cardiovascular Capacity, Speed, Good Coordination, Power, Agility
Wednesday: Yoga
Flexibility, Balance, Power, Agility
Thursday: 1 hour Elliptical
Cardiovascular Capacity, Speed
Friday: 1 Hour Boot Camp ("Butts and Guts, Cardio Weights Circuits)
Strength, Cardiovascular Capacity, Speed, Good Coordination, Power, Agility
Saturday: 45 Minute Stairmaster Sprint
Cardiovascular Capacity, Speed
Sunday: Body By Science (Weight Lifting) and 15 minute Bike
Strength, Power
Monday: Stairmaster, 30 Minute Abs
Cardiovascular Capacity, Speed, Power

Workout Resources By Type

So, how are you doing with hitting all of those aspects of fitness? If you're looking for some more ways to ring in, here's a list of free workouts broken down in those categories!

Strength
Speed
Cardiovascular Capacity
Good Coordination
Flexibility
Muscular Endurance
Agility
Power
Balance

Question of the Day:

  • Which of the 9 aspects of fitness do you most OFTEN get?
  • Which do you get the LEAST often?

New Music - Little Boxes

Pin It Print Friendly and PDF

This one has been waiting in the wings for a while, now! Any Weeds fans out there? July is the month of the Showtime TV Show "Weeds" and its resurgence into our lives! Here's our rendition of the theme song that appeared in the first few seasons. You might find a lot of covers out there, because the TV show used to commission various artists to do their own version of the song. Guess they forgot to include us on the list ;-)

But we're overachievers and did the homework anyway! Take a listen!

New Banner

How do you like it?! I'm working on making the Createlive brand a bit more apparent... this is the first in a laundry list of small changes you might be noticing over the next few months! Get excited :)

Memphis

For those of you who didn't know, I was in Memphis, Tennessee this weekend. I was in town for an alumni seminar... but, obviously, we made sure to get out of the classroom and into the city! Here's my trip in animated gif format. Have 30 seconds? Here ya go!! (It keeps repeating but the clip technically begins in the car with Justin, on the way to the airport!)

*For the record, I worked out 3 times (once each day) on this trip... but only plagued you with one hilarious -- err, embarrassing workout clip in there. You are hereby and forevermore banned from making fun of said workout clip. Mark my words!  By the way, coming soon is a great travel workout using a simple rubberized workout band! Get fit on the road, my friends! To buy the workout bands now so that you have them for your summer trips, click here!
*Included: Justin's Car, O'Hare International Airport, Memphis Cityscape, Rhodes College, Nail Bar, The Pyramid (soon to be a Bass Pro shop), The Flying Saucer, More Rhodes College, Central BBQ, Marriot Crowne Plaza Hotel, Automatic Slims, Beale Street, Silky O'Sullivan's, Bosco's, Memphis International Airport.

For those foodies out there (come on, this blog is pretty much half food...), here are a few shots to tease you...

Clockwise from top left: BBQ Chicken Nachos at Central BBQ, "Butterfly" Martini (Vodka, grapefruit juice, mint leaves, basil leaves) at Automatic Slims, Tuna Tacos at Automatic Slims, "Diver" (who even knows what is in there? seems to incorporate beer, wine, liquor, and some kind of cherry juice) at Silky O'Sullivan's.

BBQ Chicken Nachos at Central BBQ -- because I know you wanted a closer look!

A few more Instagram-dumped shots:

Yes, don't I look good for being 72 years old (how old I'd be if I graduated at 22 in 1962)?

6 Workouts You Could Do Today: Fitness Inspiration

Pin It Print Friendly and PDF

Have you been perusing Pinterest all week for some fitness motivation... but are still finding your butt sitting on the couch? Quit it with the excuses, already! Here are 6 workouts you should do today...

Go On A Run
"That's not sweat. It's your fat cells crying!"
The trail by my parents' house really does have a sign that says that. I'm pretty sure it's an old one from some high school cross country meet... but it's a darn good sign to see mid-run!
To make things more fun, try making your run into a game using intervals. Either download or stream these workout playlists, which will time out Tabata-style intervals for you (sprint for 20 seconds, walk or stand for 10) or use the scenery to make it happen. The above picture is taken on a trail that has both shady and sunny spots - I make it a point to always sprint through any parts of the trail that are shaded. You can also incorporate high knees and butt kicks, using the same methods!

Get Insane With Insanity
Did I mention I'm an Insanity fan? Shaun T of Beachbody's Insanity series is a goofy, hilarious guy who somehow gets away with bossing me around for an hour at a time!
Not ready to shell out the dough for Insanity? Try this HIIT workout, which works off of a very similar method.

Watch TV... On The Elliptical
Yes, that is Courtney from The Bachelor. After all, what's better to get you fired up than a crazy bimbo who's trying to steal Ben's sanity? Whether you're a Courtney fan or not, scheduling an entire hour (or more!) on the elliptical will help you get the cardio you need!
Try out Megan Fox's interval workout, amended for the elliptical, here!

Hang Out With Jillian
I have periodic dates with Jillian Michaels. See the candles glowing in the above picture? Yeah, that happens. I set up some candles, place a fan to blow perfectly in my face, lay out a mat and do her workout. It's like a date with fitness. What could be better?
Check out Jillian's videos:
No More Trouble Zones (pictured above), which incorporates light weights and tones and lifts what most people consider their "trouble zones," like triceps, inner and outer thighs, glutes, and abs.
Banish Fat Boost Metabolism, which incorporates cardio exercises to ramp up your heart rate, burn fat, and speed up your metabolism.
Don't Want to Wait For Jillian to Come in the Mail?
Try this workout while you're watching TV! Set yourself up the same way... candles, fans, luxury... and your very favorite TV show!

Rip Your Abs
Whether you're using a video like P90X's Ab Ripper X or a good old self-guided ab workout, you really can't go wrong when you get some good ab ripping in. No, I don't mean ripping your muscles--- I mean getting ripped. Don't have a video? Perform sets five and six of this workout for 10 minutes of ab insanity!

Go On a Bike Ride
If you've got a bike, head out on an adventure. You can bike to work, bike to a friend's house, bike to the beach, bike through the woods... You can head toward a destination or simply ride in a loop, taking in the scenery as you go. Either way, if you can make it about 2 hours, you've burned between 500 and 1,000 calories! Consider downloading an interval app or downloading this music to force yourself to alternate between hard-as-you-can pedaling and coasting! :)

Free Workout Music Timed for Intervals and Tabatas

Pin It Print Friendly and PDF
Monday's Tabata post (Full Body Workout in 25 Minutes) inspired a few hours of music editing on my part (with the help of a certain someone who has much more musical expertise than myself... cough cough... Justin). I realized that, first of all, many of you don't have interval or tabata timers. Sure, you can download HIIT or Interval timer apps on your iPhone or Android device... but then you're stuck watching the timer or using your phone that you normally use for music as a timer. Tisk tisk. That will not do.

So here's my solution. Each of these songs are perfectly timed for Tabatas and interval workouts (Looking for Tabata workouts? Find workouts for your arms, legs, butt, and abs here, or full body workouts here and here!).

The basics:
  • Each song is 4 minutes long (except for the last song, which is 25 minutes long and includes 6 different tabata setsm each of which are 4 minutes).
  • Each song includes 8 sets of 20 second exercise segments interspersed with 10 second rests.
  • Static starts out each song.
  • "3...2...1... BEEP!" counts down to each 20-second exercise segment. Once you hear the beep, start working as hard and fast as you can!
  • "RRRRINGGG!" a school-bell alerts you that your 20-second exercise segment has ended and you now have 10 seconds to rest.
  • Static plays during the 10 second rest segments, just in case your brain restarts and you can't remember what you're supposed to be doing.
  • Fog Horns that last about 3 long seconds alert you that the 4 minute Tabata set has finished. This might become your favorite sound in the world...
